I was perusing some of the threads in here and I noticed amidst all the wonderful healthy sounding foods, hot dogs were mentioned!   Tongue

How can hot dogs be healthy?  We like the taste, and occasionally ate some at Costco, but when we found out that hot dogs are allowed to contain, by law, something like 3 %  OFFAL (Look it up!)  we've avoided them.
Does anyone know of hot dogs that are healthy?  I love the idea of roasting them on the barby with dh and kids, but it would seem counter productive to all the other health precautions we take.

What do y'all think?

I buy hot dogs at the healthfood store. They are beef and don't contain any nitrates and such. They are pricey but are fun a few times in the summer! Our kids loved learning how to cook their own over a fire this year. Good memories!!

I believe Hebrew National does not have any meat byproducts in their hotdogs.  Those are what we buy, since we don't know of any free range ones around our neck of the woods.  Wink

What about veggie dogs. There are some really gross tasting brands but Morningstar Farms has veggie dogs that are really yummy without all of the yucky in them though they are pretty expensive so we dont purchase them too often .They are really good on the grill too   Smiley

Those sound like the kind we get...I think ours are [Organic] Applegate (?) Farms ($6.59 for 8, on sale for $4.29).  Beef and spices...nice to have a "healthy" hot dog w/ 3 children and hot summer days!  We threw some in a pot of baked beans at the beach on Monday--yum!

Yeah, I think veggie dogs would probably be the only healthy hot dogs listed here  Grin
But wow -- the expense!   Shocked
I guess if you've got a hankering for hot dogs, it's worth it.

Nitrates, offal, sodium - it's in mostly all the regular ones.  Although I did see one brand at our store - I think it was oscar meyer (  Tongue ) that advertized no nitrates.  We tried those the other night for our sons birthday and they were pretty good.  I will have to check out the veggie dogs mentioned.
Thanks!

O.K., here's an idea from one of my sisters.  She "grills" cooked carrots with seasonings and then serves them as if they were hot dogs with all the trimmings and yummy side dishes.  This really satisfies her family!

Oh! THAT would CONVINCE my dh that I'd finally gone over the edge. He isn't a picky eater and is generous with his compliments, but I think he would draw the line if he bit into a hot dog and found a carrot. He's a big baseball fan, and I'm not certain, but I think he would equate it with a communist plot. ROTFL   Cheesy Cheesy  Wink

On the other hand, it's one of those ideas that I actually considered for 1/2 of a minute . . .

Of course, if you leave the processed condiments and bread and go with a non-organic carrot, it probably isn't much healthier than the ball park original, IMO.  Undecided

Yeah, gotta agree here SC.  Some men just have to bite into MEAT a couple times a day to feel human.

I'll never get it.  But I'm married to one.

(Did God really create carnivores.....?)

Tried 'smart dogs' on the grill the other night.  GAG!!  Mushy and awful (now where is the barfing smiley when you need it?)   Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue

I had to laugh SC, because my husband DID draw the line when he  heard tell of the idea.  My sister's husband was so proud bragging on her carrot dogs but my husband whispered later when we were alone to not even TRY the idea out in our home!

My sister uses sprouted grain hot dog buns and makes all the condiments and chili from Nourishing Traditions recipes.  So, at least they really ARE healthy.  (hee, hee)  Maybe there are other husbands out there who would be thrilled like my brother-in-law by these carrot dogs, but my husband and yours don't appear to be among their number.  Oh, well!   Cheesy

LOL! Yes, I do think that would be placing him in the way of temptation needlessly.
I will say this for him, my dh doesn't mind eating without meat. It's just that he expects to get hot dogs when hot dogs are served.  Grin Grin

I think my dh & yours would get along well at a cook out.

These aren't hot dogs but they are close! We bought some oh I can't remember the name now, stuff you usually eat with sourcrout, or at least my family did...... Um anyway they are like big hotdogs, and we got some at Trader Joes, that are all natural pork, fed only veggie diets no preservatives no nitrates no nothing, just meat. They are SO good!

No, No,  the key is not to resist, but to mention it to your husband who will also start craving a hotdog and then go and make them   Grin Grin Grin  Just Kidding.  -KG

I buy Trader Joes Hot Dogs ... my kids like hot dogs and they don't feel like they are being " deprived" for the sake of healthy eating!! I've tried every variety of veggie dog and these are the best alternative. Trader Joes hot dog rolls are all natural, whole wheat, and cheap...and I cannot for the life of me make hot dog rolls!! They laugh at me cuz when i go there I buy 10 pkgs of each and keep them in my freezer.

Applegate Farms makes nitrite-free hot dogs . Today I was in a local grocery store and they had a new Grain Fed Beef hot dog by Applegate Farms. $5 + per package. For those wh0 must have a real hot dog these are the best we've tried so far. Earlier in the summer I was in Virginia and the store there had nitrite-free hot dogs by Oscar Meyer. I have NOT found those anywhere here in the northeast.

I second the Applegate Farms hot dogs. They are our favorite of any brand- nat or reg grocery store brands.
