Resources to find local churches
«
on:
December 20, 2007, 08:54:42 AM »
We are looking into finding a church that we can agree with most of the things taught there. We know there will not be an exact match and we are not church hopping. We have been a part of a new church and all along there have been things that concerned us. We have discussed our concerns with them, but we have been dismissed because they believe it is just a cultural issue. That is not okay with us. Dh and I have written out what we believe. We would like to find a church that supports as many of those things as possible. I have lokked on Vision Forum and we have nothing listed for our area. I have also looked on the fellowship directory. Are there any other places we can look? Would if be easier to just call around to our local churches and ask them personally what they believe?

Do you have any contact with other families with similar beliefs? I'm thinking of playgroup, homeschool group, friends, or family. Maybe start asking people about their church and what they like about it would be a starting place.
We have always been the odd ones in our church and have relied on long distance fellowships with like minded families, so I don't know how to be successful at finding a church home where others practice the life we do. If you are in an area where there are enough churches to do so, I think calling and talking to the pastor would be the best way to find a church that supports your beliefs. Don't forget to pray for guidance, of course.
Another thought, which is what we have come to believe is true for us, is that your family may be a minister to others in your church. God has moved us around the country a lot in the past 8 years and we have been in a couple of churches where we were the odd ones. We have seen that in each church where we have been, God has used us to minister to specific needs in others and has really blessed our family.
just my thoughts and rambling ~

I've heard that Vision Forum has on their website a list of churches that have registered wtih them that share the same values/doctrine/standards.
Vision Forum tends to be Calvinist/Reform in their theology, but I know of a variety of churches of denominational backgrounds that are listed.
That could be a start?
Otherwise, No Greater Joy has a fellowship directory out there somewhere, you could see if people in your area are on it.
Maybe there are some 7xSunday folks in your area that are looking also?

HelpmeetPlusHelpers,
I know you said you have already been to FellowshipDirectory, I just wanted to post the link for others.

A note of clarification: FellowshipDirectory is not run by NGJ.
Quote
This website came into being from a `challenge' by Michael Pearl at a Bible retreat. He said that at least half of the people he speaks to either do not have people they can fellowship with or have a difficult time finding other like-minded believers. He suggested that a possibility for bringing together like-minded believers would be to have a website where people could find those believers in their area. We decided to take on that `challenge'. This site is the result.

Home Discipleship churches are similar to Family Integrated on Vision Forum. That is a smaller movement, and it is in Illinois mainly, but there are a few other places that they have started up. We wanted to do one here in our state, but the door closed mainly because a Family Integrated church is starting in our area and my dh felt that two similar churches did not need to start just 10 or so minutes from one another.
That website:

We have already looked on vision forum's website for family integrated churches and there are none in our area. The closest one is over 45 miles away. The fellowship directory has a good many families in the 100 mile radius, but none locally that we are similar to.
The home discipleship website was one we hadn't tried before. Unfortunately, we are not in Illinois. Any other options? If not, we will take to just calling around. We just thought we might to save some steps if you all knew a good resource.

Hi I don't get a chance to respond much here. Mostly I just read the different threads. But I feel compelled to say something here. You said you had young children who were already forming attachments in this church. Well in our experience the church you choose now will be the church that will become the church of your grown children and maybe your grandchildren. Choose carefully. To try and change churches after friendships are formed will be (In our experience and what we have observed) very hard on your young peoples spiritual lives. We have seen young people lose heart when parents change churches after close attachments are made. Its really hard on them. Choose carefully. Ask yourself if you want your young adults believing the doctrine that will be taught there. If they grow up there they will most likely believe at least a portion of it. But I am sure they are good people and that makes it tough. And I know where else ya gonna go?

Then, if you and dh are concerned about your children making ties, maybe he can visit the church alone and then bring the family.
This is very good advice. A friend of mine shared it with me when I was having questions about our church. You can get a lot from reading the doctrine, but it all comes together when you are actually there.
The father is the best judge of that, to start, and should ALWAYS visit a new church alone before taking his family IMO.

WE GET TO GO TO CHURCH THIS SUNDAY!!
We have been looking every where. I think we may have found a church. We read their whole website and sent an email asking some more questions. The pastor responded and said exactly what we had hoped to hear. Thank you all for your insight. Please pray that this church will be a good fit for our family. We are so ready to get back to attending church! Dh said that since we he has answered are questions, we will go as a family. We are so excited, but you might have been able to tell that already.

All i have stated is with the blessing of my husband.. thank you. i am also seeking how to contact bekkah and her husband,(sp) im reguards to the fellowhip in new mexico, as we are not too far from there, and have always desired to visit. at this point we are considering relocating to a warmer and dryer climate, and nm has always been a sort of pull for my husband.. thnk you

do you agree with this statement for a married couple withOUT kids yet? or only intend that statement for kids protection
we're in a position where we just found out something about our current church that we really don't agree with... i'm not sure how big of a deal to make of it, because we plan to buy a house and move relatively soon anyway... but when we do move it will be fairly permanent, and i'm trying to figure out how to find a church that is right for us. i feel like going by myself for a while could be a good idea.... it would give me a chance to learn about them without my wife getting socially attached, which could influence her decision to want to stay.... i feel like going together during the early phase gets too social too quickly instead of really figuring out what that place is all about

I actually have friends that live sorta in that area....I think there is a church on London that is like the "family-intergrated" church....I don't live in that area but if that's not too far, I'll try to learn more.
Also there are two other churches in your area I've heard my friends mention...if you want the names I can try to get them to you???
Let me know.

I have friends there...I visited there a few weeks ago, but don't know anything about the town...They have a homeschool group I believe...that might be some place to contact and see where some of them attend. (even if you don't, they are such a wealth of info IMO)
Our home church had THREE homeschool families, only 7 kids when we came to it..the last few years, that number has grown so much...I can't even keep count anymore...even one of our pastors is now homeschooling. That has nothing to do with the questions but I thought it was interesting

I apologize, I have not read this entire thread... but I wanted to point out that local homeschool (online) groups like yahoo are probably good places to inquire about churches. I think that some of the best ones don't even have a number in the phone book, LOL... There are several around here that are not listed on the vision forum website, but would meet some if not all of their criteria. I suspect this is the case with a lot of areas. You might even ask that someone contact you privately rather than sharing openly with the group....
