I just wanted to share about my favorite modest skirt.  It's the cotton twill wrap skirt sold at http://www.Tznius.com. This is a Jewish modest clothing website, but I love the things there even though I'm a Christian, not Jewish.

I justs checked out this site....
I like these two skirts:

I LOVE those two also!  Does anyone know how you can get them to fit short people though?   Undecided Sad  They are 40 -42 inches long - that would sweep the floor on me!

Yeah, I emailed them once and asked them about the length. I am 5 feet tall and they said they only had one skirt that would work for me.  I can't remember which one. They said they were working on it. though.

Pooh - those two skirts are my absolute DREAM skirts.  I usually don't like the clothes on some of the modest sites I have seen so I was really surprised that I FOUND SOMETHING!!!!  But then....I'm a Smurf!

Nice skirts, nice site... It was fun looking at the scarves!  Makes me wish women wore them in our culture and day...  Smiley  I sometimes wear a warm scarf around my head in the winter when I'm outside, and I think it looks so feminine and pretty!

I like this corduroy one too, for winter.  I'm wondering if the other two would be too cold for winter!

I have placed several orders from tznius and have been very happy with the quality and service.  I just got 2 wrap skirts and 3 stretchy scarves.  My first order was a wide headband (good quality, but poofs at the side) and the tiered denim skirt.  Just my plug.

Hi, everybody! I'm coming over here from the skirts/pants thread ...
If you want to look great and still wear very conservative and modest clothes you need to check out a book Color Me Beautiful by Carole Jackson. You might find it at your library. I bought a used copy at a thrift store. Some of us girls got together with fabric samples and draped each other to see what season we were. If you can afford it there are class done by professionals.
Changing the colors I wear is making people comment on how great I look even when I am wearing an old shirt, denim jumper or skirt and bandana. Oh yeah, and dirty boots. Lips Sealed
Hey, I spend alot of time gardening and doing dirty farm work. Cheesy

I am hoping some of the others will jump over here and talk about styles and how to know what styles are flattering and still modest.

Ok so I am 5'6" (my optimal weight is about 145 or more right now more Wink). Generally size 12-16 are comfortably  loose(depends on the brand/pattern.) I am very short waisted, literally only two inches between my ribcage and top of hip. My length is mostly in my legs. I THINK Huh I look best in tops that are loose and about hip length over not to full skirts or princess style sleeveless dresses. I have done some dresses with a vest in the front ties in back for dress up. I'd like to achieve a bought jacket and skirt look, but I hate long sleeves Embarrassed Besides my arms are rather muscular Tongue Embarrassed so what can I do???
Oh and I'd like to stick with patterns that can double as nursing patterns. I've put zippers in the bottom layer of the bodices of my clothes. Really soft and drapey fabrics don't so so well though...

You could almost be my twin!  Smiley  It's funny reading something someone else wrote on here and thinking, "That sounds like I wrote that!"   Grin  I lost a lot of weight in the last year, but a year ago, you would have been describing me exactly - short waist and all!

I'm interested in this book you mentioned!  I'm pretty clueless when it comes to things like that!  I'll have to look at our library.  One thing I've noticed - I never liked the color pink, but one time I was wearing this really lovely colored rosy pink sweater and I got compliments all day!  I've discovered that certain shades of pink make me look the best, so now I wear a lot of pink!  Smiley  Funny the way that works!

Okay, boysmama (or farmgirl!)
I followed you to this thread, 'cuz I am NOT a 'hip' dresser, either.  I was trained in color draping over 20 years ago and was a cosmetic consultant with a VERY trendy style salon near a big college.  AMAZING STUFF!  Boy!  That was like another lifetime ago! Roll Eyes
But it's really not something that you have to pay a lot to have done for you.  You can find all of this out for yourself with the book you mentioned, Color Me Beautiful.  The majority of people just seem to 'know' what colors and styles are right for them.  Some sort of sense that has developed or something.  I didn't and learning what was right for me really was wonderful.  Changed my whole outlook.
As far as styles to wear, sounds like you have the right idea.  I like the part about zippers in the bodice.  I made some dresses for a friend that were simple, high waisted dresses with built-in vertical openings from the shoulder seam to the waist - snaps to close.  Then, I made a contrasting loose top to wear over the dress.  Looked great, nursing was easy, and she felt pretty.  I liked the dresses with attached vest-fronts that tied in back, for myself.
Try finding some books about clothing design and alterations at the library.  They may give you some good ideas about what styles to try.
My dh likes me in long, loose, flowing things.  I feel so feminine in them - - even when I'd gardening in the mud, painting a door, or whatever!  Lovely ladies do lots of dirty, difficult chores!   Cheesy

I make most of my daughters and my skirts, as the styles we like are difficult to find and, for us at least, afford.  We like skirts that are wide and swirling, around mid-calf length or so.  I usually make a 6 or 8 panel, gored skirt.  I just cut my fabric in six or eight, equal wedge shaped pieces, a few inches longer than the finished length.  I stitch the panels together and finish the waist and hem.  Sometimes, I make the waist close fitting for the girls, with either a zipper or button closure.  Most often, I make an elastic waistband, as we usually wear our shirts or tunics over the skirt or with a belt.  We all like having pockets in our clothing, so that is an essential element, for us.  I also make simple dresses for myself.  I don't have much adornment on them usually.  Sometimes I use fun fabrics - like the jumper I have on today with red and green chiles all over it - or sometimes I embellish a jumper with applique or a pieced, quilted bodice.
I don't have the shape I once had, but even when I was 'model shaped', my dh preferred that I not attract looks from other men.  He does not want us to show our shape too much.  He still finds me pleasant to look at, and we have a fun and loving relationship. He's the type that will pull me into the corner of the kitchen, workshop, or family room for a quick grope and cuddle! hee hee  He makes the children squeal with glee.

I love the skirts at www.stylishjeans.com     They are perfect for younger hip girls and perfect for women.  I have half a dozen that I bought over a wide period of time, they are a bit expensive but they wash and wear so practically, I have also found some very stylish  jean skirts at www.newport-news.com ,   with the stylish jeans skirts i have found that you kinda have to pick out what size jeans you would wear and then get the same size skirt, they are small sizes, and since i like mine to sit on my hips i buy these 1 or 2 sizes bigger than my jean size.  I am a size 6 but newportnews skirts fit best if they are an 8 or a 10.

Thought this might help you less tall girls with the hemming of those bohemian skirts.  Hem them from the top.  You can keep the style of the skirt by taking the elastic out and cutting the skirt down from the top.  Just cut the skirt about 2 inches longer than you want it to be,  fold the top over a half inch ( you may want to serge or zig zag the edge first) and then over another inch and a half or however wide the elastic is plus a quarter inch.  Top stitch on the bottom fold very close to the edge and leave a small opening to thread the elastic back through.  I would leave this open in case you find your 'belly expanding'!  This may be something some of you already know but sometimes I miss the obvious and need a little 'oh yeah' reminder!

Hi KD,

This is lovinmomma, I can't figure out how to reply to a personal message, and I just wanted you to know I wasn't ignoring you.  Here's the deal:  I just recently discovered the twill wrap skirts, so my oldest one isn't even a year old yet and is still in great shape.  I did hem my denim wrap skirt from Tznius.com, but I didn't have to hem my navy twill or my beige twill one.  Hemming the denim one was pretty straight forward.  Let me know if I can be of help in any other way...  I'm glad you're interested in the skirts - I think they're pretty great.

Do any of you have a certain pattern you like for adult jumpers?  I have a skirt w/ pockets that I can easily copy but my husband likes jumpers.  I have one that would be fairly easy to copy but it has no pockets.  Also, what material is best for feel, fit, wrinkle free, etc. and which types need linings and which don't?

I made my jumper bodice pattern by changing a simple dress bodice pattern. I really haven't used any bought jumper patterns... sorry...

I like cotton or cotton/polyester fabrics the best.I love them! They are more comfortable than straight polyester/synthetic blends and are easier to work with. The poly in the cotton makes it wrinkle-free. Only the good quality cottons are wrinkle-resistant so choose them carefully if you hate to iron. Twist the corner of the fabric you like and then smooth with your hand. That will give you an approx. idea of how badly it will wrinkle. Once the sizing is washed out it will wrinkle more and smooth/hang out more quickly. If you hang up your clothes on hangers while still damp the good fabrics won't need ironing.(unless you want a really crisp look) I don't think these fabrics need to be lined unless you want " under layer shadow protection" not provided by other garments... I wear all my clothes "relatively"  loose and am happy that cotton (and poly/cotton)  can be gently shaped w/ darts without clinging.
If I want a really "dress-up" outfit I look for whatever fabric suits the pattern I am using.

My favorite jumper pattern is Simplicity #5454.  I could *live* in this jumper!  It is sooooo comfortable and was a snap to make!  It has ties for the back and I think this makes it more flattering as it gives it some shape while still being modest.

Either that or get one of the ones of ebay.  I went through 3 patterns of the same style when I was in my teens...  Grin  I wore the same jumper style for years, and literally had no other jumper/dresses/skirt that weren't that style.

It worked for me at the time.  I could sure whip them out fast (I made 3 in one day, once).

I found a very encouraging web site for modest dress..here on this web site.  Try TZNIUS.com.  It has beautiful full length skirts, dresses, shirts and head coverings.

I ordered 4 skirts from them right after reading this post and they arrived very quickly, shipped the next day, mailed USPS priority - and anyways, I love them.  The quality of fabric is much nicer than I expected and I am happy with how they fit my very random sizes.  Since having my last baby my body is several different sizes and I often buy 16-18 just to make sure my biggest parts fit.  The wrap skirts (denim, black, & navy) are great but a big wind whipped up today and a skirt pin would have been nice at that moment.  I might look for a pretty large pin in case I have that problem again.  Even with the skirt blowing wide open, I think my flesh was still covered.  But, I think a pin would have been nice to have.  I also ordered the 6 tiered denim skirt in black corduroy.  I like that as well.    It does run a little small but mine still fits well.

Anyways, just thought I would add my kudos to tznius.com... love them!  Also, I ordered one skirt from stylishjeans.com and it is also very nice.  They too shipped the next day Smiley

I have ordered 7 items from tznius.com or modestclothing.com and I do love the skirts.  I have however been having a terrible time with a return of a defective item.  One of the skirts I ordered has a hole in it and the website asks that you contact them before returning.  I have attempted contact a dozen times and keep having problems.  Sometimes I wonder if this is a method of diffusing returns and I am frustrated by this but hope it is an isolated incident.  Otherwise, I do love the skirts I purchased.  Just thought you might want to know if you were considering purchasing from them at this time.
