I am reading all these fun cleaning and decorating tips, and I would like to hear some ideas on windows. Right now we just have....old blankets and such  Embarrassed up stairs.  I'd like to put something else up, but I am running out of ideas.
I whipped up some simple valances for my kitchen out of a walmart clearance tablecloth-got enough for my 3 windows out of one!  And in my beachy bathroom we have one of those grass mats you buy at the dollar store rolled up like blinds. My LR has miniblinds that will soon be covered by regular panels I've gotta sew up. Everything has to be something I can make for under $5, pretty much. Any tips for homemade window treatments?

My MIL took stained glass paint and painted her daughters windows to look like stained glass, they were really neat, but a little bit annoying because you had to open the window to see out, but there in the city where your neighbor is 10 ft away you don't want to look out. Smiley

When I was a teacher I took a "stained glass" window art set (about $8) and made all kinds of window art for the windows in my class room. Like when we were going through the days of creation I made different scenes for each day, it made a great visual reminder for the kids! Plus they peel right off so when we moved on to another subject I could store them somewhere else and put new ones up.

During the winter when I was a teen and really into beading I would make fish and a fish scene out of beads, then place a couple drops of hot candle wax on the back and then stick them to the window. All winter long they stayed up and then in the summer the came off with almost no mess.

During a local theatre production here I was helping design and construct the sets.  We used a lot of foam board to design a backdrop with some depth that we could use some special lighting with.  It occurred to me that this could be used in windows, too.

We are currently remodeling our daughters bedroom and plan to cut pieces of foam board to fit the windows and then cut a very open design into the board, paint it, and set it in place.  Then we will hang the panels that I made from fabric on the clearance table at the fabric store.

At a house we used to live in, we had a kitchen full of windows above the counters.  We didn't want to do anything that would hinder the wonderful light, so didn't want to put up curtains or blinds.  These were double hung, wood frame windows in a very country, cottage type of kitchen.  Using white shoe polish and a couple of paint brushes, I painted a lace-look pulled-back curtain design on the lower part of the windows.  It provided enough privacy to make me feel secure and still allowed plenty of light to come in.   It looked just like lace unless you were 5 feet away.
