I want to fast for my family too, but I have some practical questions.
How does fasting give you any more time to read and pray?
I would still be doing all the cooking and cleaning and schooling, just not the eating. Like someone else asked, do I not eat with the kids? They are a bit too young to be left alone at the table (or anywhere else for that matter) unattended. I can read my Bible outloud and pray outloud. Sometimes that does help so that I can focus better with the children running about. I want to do this. Could someone give a little more how-to detail with littles?
Is it more about the giving up of our fleshly desires?
I think this is mostly what it is about, then I think that I understand. My prayer life and Bible time doesn't increase so much as my focus. Is that right? So, if giving up something else would allow me more time to read and pray then I might should choose that instead?
Am I on the right track or way off?
(I confess, I have never fasted before so maybe I am thinking that it will be harder than it truly is. I just don't want to start and not be able to finish because I was unprepared.)
This is a wonderful idea. Thank you for the encoyragment D&L!

HPH,
A few things have come to mind in light of your questions. My children (4yo and 19mo) are really too young to be left unattended also, esp. when eating. I can't fast right now b/c of pregnancy, so if I choose to do a fast, it is a more of single-item thing or a particular group of things (i.e. I have a sweet tooth - you get my drift).
I may also choose to give up any type of media (TV, computer, phone [this being used only when necessary]) to keep my mind and heart at home.
Also, since you said you've never fasted, perhaps it would be better to try a shorter period of time instead of doing a 24-hour right off the bat, or doing all but juices or something like that. I think you could probably find a little info on WTM about this, but in knowing my own body (when not pregnant or nursing), I would think I would have to do something gradually and not cut off completely right away. I tend to be anemic - so it's a little scary for me (headaches and such).
Please, those who are knowledgeable in this, COMMENT or correct me where I'm wrong.
Does that make sense? HTH

Makes perfect sense. I am anemic too. Thank you for the reminder. I will do a little research on WTM and then do it. Thanks!

So is anyone fasting from things other than all food? I'm a nursing mamma. How is that working out? I think I ought to be doing this too!

My dh mentioned last weekend he wanted to fast and I took the opportunity to say out loud I wanted to as well. I fasted Monday ( and did not for once look at my dh and say are YOU going to? There he goes again! Saying something and not doing it)and Monday went in to Tuesday. It was not hard at all and I truly with all my heart knew that I needed God more than I needed food. By Tuesday night I was so thrilled to be eating my salad but honestly was hesitant to put anything in my mouth. I felt clean and wanted to stay that way. Other than that, the week proceeded as usual....I felt an unusual amount of stress and tension and fear..all the things I had been feeling as our situation has not changed " for the better" in the physical sense. But I felt I was persevering . To hear from God. Eventually. Towards the end of the week I had some breakthroughs in prayer...reading scripture that ministered to me ... began to pray for my dh as a man of God not as the husband I saw him to be....I ministered to someone else ... and even yesterday and today dh and I have come together to pray, minister to our son, ask for forgiveness, and seek to find some encouragement and hope together . You might think this is a small thing but its really quite huge. Yesterday I was thinking of the story of the drowning man who was offered several means of rescue and each time he said he would " wait for The Lord to rescue him." When he got to heaven..well...you may know the story. The Lord told him he had offered him all those means and he didn't take them. Our situation trying to sell our home is a lot like that man....we had several opportunities and for one reason or another let them go by. Last night ( when I couldn't sleep...instead of lying there in anguish ) I got up and read Isaiah ( 52 & 53) and began to feel a resurgence of hope that The Lord would again offer us a means of rescue . This morning my dh began to tell the exact same story!! He said to me that's confirmation!! Hurray!! You can bet I am looking forward to tommorrow's fasting day.....

OK this past Monday was 3rd time..although it was only a 12 hour fast I have had an amazing time in Exodus since then. I learned God MADE Pharaoh stubborn so GOD would be glorified. It occured to me I am complaining about my dh's stubbornness when it could be God making him that way so that we will glorify God that much more in the end. Also, dh quit smoking on Sunday and its been 4 days. It has seemed we've been in a sort of wilderness and I am really enlightened by the stories in Exodus. I have been waking up extra early to spend more time reading and studying. I've developed a hunger for the word and that feels wonderful.

I'm going to fast tomorrow (wednesday the 13th) this week. We went mountain climbing on Monday... not the time to be fasting and nursing.

In light of recent global events I believe the job of leading a family is quickly going to become more difficult.
I'll be praying for my Head more diligently in the weeks to come.
Quote
Psalm 57
Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.
I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.
He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.
My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.
Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.
They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.
My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise.
Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltry and harp: I myself will awake early.
I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations.
For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.
Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let thy glory be above all the earth.

My husband and I were talking last night. We came to the conclusion that it seems that the devil has had to change tactics some, especially regarding the families of women who have read, studied and applied the Created To Be His Helpmeet book. It appears to us that so many of the men married to these women are undergoing frontal attacks that they haven't had to face before. Often we see God using these attacks to grow and mature these men who have been riding in the backseat as their wives drove... but having experienced it ourselves we also recognize it as the enemy working to destroy these families through a different means.
So if you think about it, pray for these men, their ladies and their children. That not one family will be lost to this new tactic of the enemy but that God will use all these things for good to those families who has a wife trying her hardest to become a good helpmeet to her man.

I posted this on another thread but I thought you ladies that are fasting in prayer for your husbands might want to add this before the election:

I just received this email from "The Vanilla Man". (many WTMers know that he's posted on WTM & sells wonderful vanilla beans but that's another subject)
I thought that many of 7XS members would want to join in so I figured that I would post it here:
"Due to the critical nature of the upcoming Presidential election, Christians across the country have seen the need to unite in prayer and fasting to ask for the guidance of Almighty God as America chooses her next leader.
Please join us before Election Day, on Monday, November 3, 2008 as we seek God's face and ask for His mercy and grace."

WOW!
denim&lace, your post in another thread on how you pray for your husband was a blessing and inpiring! (You can read it here:
http://www.7xsunday.net/forum/index.php/topic,24003.msg229685.html#msg229685
)
I've been looking over the verses you mentioned and came up with a table of characteristics/traits of these offices that we can pray are worked into our husbands' lives and in our OWN lives. . . because reading the verses in context shows me that I need to be ready to 'complete the picture' by being a wife worthy of a man fit for office.
The table I ended up with is arranged by traits and office. The first column is in order of appearance in the text, but the other columns are re-arranged to follow the first. . . . Where the exact phrase was not repeated, I placed phrases with similar meaning together.
At any rate, this is what I have so far to help me pray more specifically for my husband, sons and for myself in light of the Word. THANK YOU SO MUCH D&L!

I actually do pray these things for myself too. Especially the parts regarding the wife... but the other things as well. I think I'm going to print off your chart and put it in my Bible for a reference if you don't mind.

I was reading over the stories of David and Jonathon and started thinking of their friendship, and friendship in general. Here are some verses I found to pray when praying for my husband and childrens choice of friends...
Proverbs 18:24
A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Proverbs 27:9
Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.
Proverbs 27:17
Iron sharpeneth iron: so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
Provers 17:17
A friend loveth at all times...

Just to encourage those who are still fasting. This week my DS, only 9, decided on his own accord, to join in with our prayer and fasting. He ended up just skipping one meal. I was so pleased and proud of him! He's a typical hungry boy! So don't hide from your children what you are doing. I want mine to grow up to think that fasting is part of the christian life. I was prayer extra fervently that God would answer and reward him.

I'v been fasting and praying for my dh too, but not on the same days as you all.
And I was wondering is anyone here geting results in other areas of life that your not praying for?
I 'm really confused at what it is that God is trying to show me, things have really changed in a way that is puzzling to me.
It seems to have somthing to do with salvation???But what I don't know???
Thanks D&L for starting this thread, and thanks to everyone else for sharing your fasting experiences, it's been a blessing reading them.

Salvation, really? Well that's cool! I'd say...The first most reasonable thing you can do is ask for God to show you what he wants you to understand in prayer, and while reading the scriptures.

Trust me I have been asking God to show me....I'm sure in good time he will.
One thing is for sure prayer and fasting is really powerful.
It seems like i enjoy reading my bible more too..........I don't feel like have to read, I really want to learn and know more.

I think that Tuesday will be the day.

I would like to join, but I don't think I can do an all day fast.
Maybe a meal to start out with... My spirit is willing but my flesh is weak!
