I give my kids " berry well" off and on to prevent illness, and I use GOOT on them frequently in the wintertime. If someone in the family comes down with the stomach flu, the rest of us drink Kefir and take acidophilus, and stay well.  I can't tell you how thankful I am for this stuff! It has helped us tremendously.........What can I do for my baby's health? I can't give him berry well, or kefir.......but I'd like to have something to boost his immune system after he's had lots of " people" exposure. What do you do?

If you nurse your baby, he will get your immunities.  Keep your own defenses up with pro-biotics and you can pass this on to your baby.  It is the best defense you can give your child.  I have had three babies that were newborns during flu season.  Last year, two of my older children actually got the flu.  However, I nursed my baby and tried to keep her in another room and my baby never got sick.  Hope this helps.

How old is baby?  I couldn't nurse either of mine, and our natural doctor told us to put colostrum powder in their bottles.  I am using goat milk for my infant with an eighth of a teaspoon of colostrum powder in each bottle no matter the size of the bottle, and the one year old is getting bottles of formula (he didn't take goat milk well either) and he has just 2/3 a teaspoon of colostrum powder a day, I usually mix it in his breakfast.  My one year old was put on it because he has lots of allergies and it appears the baby does too.  But the colostrum powder helps the immunities.  I also give both of them liquid baby vitamins, one dropper full for one year old, half a dropper full for baby.

Dixiemom- I got some probiotics. Interesting stuff. Thanks for the tip!

KJB and Siege- Colostrum powder?? Very interesting! What is the source? Very very fascinating. I had a terrible time getting started breastfeeding this time..........No troubles with my other kiddos.........It's good to know what the alternatives are out there, so I can spread the word! " Nourishing Traditions" has some neat formula recipes as well.

I've been taking C From Nature from www.phporders.com.  Great stuff.  It's not isolated vitamin C, or some kind of chemical concoction, but carefully low temp. dried fruits that are high in Vitamin C complex (amla fruit, other stuff that has way more vit. c than an orange).  I believe it works because of the effect it has on my gums which have been bleeding and receding.  EmergenC vitamin C packets worked for a while, then wore off.  I believe my body was pulling other nutrients from itsself to complete the incomplete vitamin C. (Yes, I know they add other stuff to it, but I still don't think it's the same).  C from nature has helped my gums, and I'm using that for my baby's whooping cough (through nursing), and my two year old.  They have both had a lesser case of it than others we know.

We are also doing cod liver oil (Nordic Naturals- with the natural vitamins A and D only.  We believe that synthetic is toxic- see www.westonaprice.org or google weston a price foundation).  I even gave my six month old a little in a dropper, and I'm taking a lot (the capsules).  We're juicing too, and eating lots of raw organic veggies, which baby gets through my milk.    I cut out dairy for a while, but finally had some raw goat milk (my teeth really needed it), and it didn't seem to have any effect on his coughing.  In fact, that night he had a better night than the previous one.

Hope something here helps!

If you are nursing just make sure you are getting plenty of vitamin C before and after going out.  Baby will get it through you.

If you feel something coming on, taking some garlic will help you both also.

Oh, and cut out any sugar.  Sugar lowers your immune system dramatically for several hours after eating it.  Best to go out on a good hight protein meal and wait to have your treats till the next day.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to quote properly. I just wanted to respond to the mention of cod liver oil. I have a five month old, and I too use Cod Liver Oil. I take a tablespoon once a night, it seems to help me sleep too. I am also pumping. Is my baby getting enough or should I give him a little more through a dropper.

Speaking of colostrom, Healthline sells a great quality Colostrom from organic feed cows, and the capsule does not have the magnesium sterarete that is so bad for us.

Lucky Scrunchy (I like your name),

According to the Weston a Price foundation, a pregnant nursing mother ought to be getting a dose of Cod Liver Oil which provides 20,000 IU of vitamin A.  If a dose is given to a child three months to 12 years, 5,000 IU is reccomended.  This is natural vitamin A.  The Weston A Price foundation maintains that synthetic vitamin A is toxic and ought to be avoided by everyone, especially pregnant and nursing mothers and children.  You probably already know this, but in case you don't, many brands, even Carlson now, so denature their oil that they must replace the A and D with synthetic.  Currently (and you can check this on www.westonaprice.org) Sally Fallon is reccomending Garden of Life and Nordic Naturals brands of Cod Liver Oil.  I like the Nordic naturals because they have capsules and my dh doesnt' have to deal with fish breath from me  Lips Sealed Wink

Personally, I have noticed the effects of cod liver oil are improved even more when taken shortly before or after eating a little butter.  Weston A. Price also mentions this in his writings.

Thank you, Denim and Lace Smiley I read a similar explaination of cod liver oil in " nourishing traditions", but I guess I'm still not " fully getting it." Roll Eyes

Anybody use acerola powder??? I found that in the superfoods section of " Nourishing Traditions". Looks like Amazon.com has some Smiley

Also, a question about colostrum powder. " Nourishing Traditions" says to buy some that was made with low temps. and non-defatted. Amazon has a lot of different brands. Does anyone have a brand recommendation?

Good thread Smiley Thanks ladies Smiley

Saturday evening we went to Chucky Cheese for ds's birthday.  By Sunday morning Mo (8 mo) had a terribly yellow runny nose and couldn't sleep lying down.  I just nursed her alot and snuggled her all day Sunday.  By Monday morning the nose mucous was turning green and her eyes were watery and she was quite miserable.  I took one large clove of garlic that morning, one large clove that evening and nursed her often (she snacked all day because eating a full meal was difficult since she couldn't breathe very well.) .  By Tuesday morning the runny nose was clear again and significantly slower.  Today it's just a trickle.

Garlic is a wonderful thing.

When there was a flu going around while the twins were nursing this past winter, i would immediately start taking ultra immune from Beeyoutiful along with garlic, echinacea, etc. The babies never got sick, even when others in the family would be down. Once i thot they were a little under the weather but it was so mild that i wasn' t ever totally sure. I am a total believer in the immunities in breast milk.

DenimandLace and ManyWeaver: This is so fascinating! I wish I had known all of this back when my oldest was getting sick from the church nursery all the time......( I don't send my kids to nursery anymore-but that's not the main reason Wink) I remember him having a runny nose for 2 weeks at a time! Roll Eyes  Man, this knowledge could have saved me a lot of grief!

Many Weavers: Is ultra immune OK for nursing moms?

I love all the knowledge that I am obtaining about natural health, but shesh I have to say that the cost of all this stuff gets a little......... Shocked Shocked Shocked

Garlic is cheap.. and usually 'organically' grown.   Most bugs don't fancy garlic much.   Wink

Hi Holly: Thanks for the post. Interesting.... I gave my 6 month old a little cod liver oil straight, (I am pumping and usually take at least 1 teaspoon full every night) and his back, which was riddled all over with eczema, was almost completely healed. Is this a coincidence or is there a connection?

Thanks

HSN,  have you ever looked at www.luckyvitamins.com?  You can get things on there for 50% off or more, and there shipping is a flat rate of $5.95 for orders under $100 and FREE for orders over $100.  I just order eight different things, and I paid only $60, and that included the shipping.  It's really very reasonable.  NOW Foods works w/ Beeyoutiful, so a lot of the products there are the same, just a lower price at Lucky.

She is recommending those two in the stores but she has more recommendations for online and mail order...

Quote
As of June 2007, we recommend the following brands of cod liver oil:

In Stores: Garden of Life, regular dose cod liver oil; Nordic Naturals Vitamin D Cod Liver Oil

Online/Mail Order:

Dr. Ron's High Vitamin Old Fashioned Blue Ice Pure Cod Liver Oil, 1-877-472-8701, drrons.com
Radiant Life, Premier High Vitamin Cod Liver Oil, (888) 593-8333, 4radiantlife.com
Blue Ice, High Vitamin Cod Liver Oil, (402) 858-4818, greenpasture.org
Wolf River Naturals, wolfrivernaturals.com...
She lists other brands for different countries too HERE

I buy the Blue Ice High Vitamin by Green Pastures but I order it from this website:
http://www.renewedhealth.com/site/474569/product/917-6998592
They have it for $16.95.

I like it because 1) you don't have to take as much [who wants to take tablespoons full of any oil] and 2) you don"t have to take as much [so one bottle lasts a lot longer, which saves $$$].  Grin Grin

Where do you get it KJB1611? I need to know for IF I have more and cannot nurse long. CJ

A GREAT place to get all natural colostrom is: http://www.healthline.cc/
They do not use magnesium steararate in their capsules. If you read up on them, you will see that they have the best quality products. I personally have used the colostrom and nucleotides. I have heard that their "Food Trio" is the best.
