I just found out that I'm pregnant and I've also been trying to heal a leaky gut.  A leaky gut is holes in my small intestine, which have created food allergies and rashes.  If I eat things I shouldn't or too much of something I may get bloating, gas, upset stomach, sick feeling.
Anyways I have been on a bunch of stuff to help me heal and after looking in my books it doesn't tell me much about them.  So I hoping that someone else can help me.  I will list all of the supplements I'm taking or have been taking. Please let me know if they are safe to take while pregnant, and if they are not safe, why?  You may not know about the supplements, but maybe you could look it up in a book you have about them and let me know.  Maybe your book will say more about them than mine did

 1.  Multidophilus (L. Acidophilus, B. Bifidum, L. Bulgaricus)

2.  Enzymes(Vegetal analog of Pancreatin, Acid-Stable Protease to break down protein) (Lipase to break down fats) (alpha-Amylase, Amyloglucosidase to break down carbohydrates) (Cellulase, Hemicellulase to break down fiber) (Lactase to break down mild sugar)

3.  Uva Ursi Extract

4. Blue Heron (Combination of all-natural fibers and herbs to absorb and eliminate toxins improving colon function) (Flax (linum usitatissimun) seed, Psyllium (Plantago ovata) seed Husk, Rice (Oryza sativa) Bran, Dried Plum (Prunus domestica) Fruit, Fenugreek (Trigonella Foenum-graecum) Seed, Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra) Bark, Triphala (a blend of amla fruit (Phyllanthus emblica),k Belleric myrobalan fruit (Terminalia bellerica), and chebuic myrobalan fruit (terminalia Chebula), Spectra Probiotic Proprietary Blend (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium, infantis, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus helveticus, Lactobacillus casei, lactobacillus salivarius, and streptococcus thermophilus), Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) Root Extract 35:1), Papain (Papaya enzyme 6,000 USP units/mg)

5.  Glutagenics (L-Glutamine, Deglycyrrhizinized Licorice Root, Aloe Leaf Extract (aloe barbadensis))

6.  IgG 2000 DF (Immunoglobulins (IgA, IgM, IgE, IgD), (Also, typically provieds: Transferrins, IGF-1, TGFB-1) (I was told this is like a dairy free closterum)

7.  Grapeseed Extract

8.  D3 (D-1000) (I to take 2000 to 3000 iu daily)

9. Fish oil (EPA, DHA, other omega-3's

10 Evening Primrose oil

11. CoQ10

12.  Aloe Vera Juice

I have asked my doctor and mid wife about these, but not much impute.  My mid wife was not sure about them.  The doctor just put me on lower doses.  I know I can't expect medical advice from anyone really.  I just want to know about the supplements that I'm taking and if they could hurt the baby.  Also any books you can mention that might help I would be grateful for.  Thank you for all your help, I look forward to some responses.  NV Smiley

The multdophilus and enzymes are basically 'food products'.  I took both of these through all of my pregnancies with the OK from a MD for my first 3 pregnancies and the OK from my midwife in the last one.

I used Uva Ursi at my midwifes suggestion for a urinary tract infection during my last pregnancy.

I don't have any experience with #'s 4,5,6,7, 8, 10, 11 or 12 during pregnancy... sorry, maybe somebody else can tell you more on those...

I did take fish oil or cod liver oil throughout 2 of 4 pregnancies.  One of the two pregnancies that I didn't take the fish oil supplements for I was eating fish about two or three times a week.  The only one I didn't get a good dose of Omega's with during pregnancy has had eczema and skin disorders almost since he was born.  Which has cleared up quite a bit for him with fish oil supplements and raw fresh milk.  I highly recommend an Omega supplement for every pregnant woman!  Oh, and both my doctor and midwife OK'd these supplements as well.

Denim&lace,

Thank you for your post.  I was wondering if you have any books you could look up my supplements in and see what is says.  Mine did not say much.  I just know that Uva Ursi and Evening Primrose oil, and maybe licorice root could start contractions or labor.

I'm mainly worried about, Glutaginics (L-Glutamine, Licorice Root), IgG 2000DF, Uva Ursi, Blue Heron, Evening Primrose Oil, and Aloe Vera Juice.

Any help from anyone would be great.  Weather from your own experience or a book, or a family member or friend.  I just need some peace of mind about all the supplements I'm taking and how is may affect the baby.

Thank you, Merry Christmas and God Bless, NV Smiley

I can't offer you alot, but I know 3 out of 3 midwives have told me NOT to use Uva Ursi while pregnant. One midwife had witnessed the miscarriage she feels was caused or aggravated by Uva Ursi. I would also have concerns about licorice;  might take Evening Primrose if it were part of an omega balance formula but not alone in early pregnancy.

Have you looked at any diet plans that might help you heal your leaky gut with foods? There are some interesting threads on a program called GAPS at welltellme.com or you could google " GAPS diet"  This is probably a bad time to go on an extremely restricted diet, but if you took a moderate approach I believe it might help.

Boysmama,

Thank you for your post.  I have stoped taking the Uva Ursi, but my doctor was going to just have me lower it, but I didn't feel comfortable with what little I had read so the nurse told me to see how I feel without it.  I don't think it's been really different by not taking it, so I have decided not to.  Thank you for your info on it.
I have still been taking 500 mg of licorice root in the Glutagenics, but not sure if I want to contine.  Do you have a book that says anything about it?  If so please let me know.
I also looked up leaky Gut on naturalcures.com and is says to take L-Glutamine (which is in my Glutagenics), MSM, Calcium/Magnesium Butryate, Ginger tea or caps, Peppermint tea or caps, zinc, Gamma oryzanol, phosphatidyl choline, gamma linolenic Acid, Butyric Acid, Renew Pro Whey Protein powder.
Does anyone know about MSM, calcium/magnesium butryate, and zinc during pregnancy?  I have been drinking some peppermint tea, like one cup a day.  Since I can't have dairy the Pro Whey Protein powder is out.

I have been on a more restricted diet due to the leaky gut causing allergies.  I had allergy testing done like two months ago or so.  I can't have dairy, sugar, yeast, coffee, pinapple, banana, broccoli, sesame seeds, buckwheat, there are some more I have written down.  I can have some wheat, oats, other veggies, fruit, and meats.  I'm suppose to rotate my diet, but I haven't been very good at that.  I'm also a picky eater so it make is harder for me with food choices.  I would think that I should take the calcium/magnesium since I can't have any dairy?  I will also look at the GAPS diet you talked about.

If you are referring to aloe  juice with the chunks in it like from a Korean or Japanese food store you should be fine.  It is traditionally used to heal intestinal or stomach ulcers and disease. It sooths and promotes healing.  But it usually also has vit. c, calcium lactate, and corn syrup in it as well.  1-2 glasses/day is safe, but anymore than that can lead to diarrhea.  As others mentioned, I have heard much about licorice  being dangerous for a pregnancy.

If you check over on WTM you will find a thread on calcium/magnesium during pregnancy.  I used Beeyoutiful's Bome Ami faithfully during my last pregnancy and had the very easiest natural birth you could  imagine...  which, after my first birth of three days in labor and then almost having an emergency C-section, a pretty normal hospital birth for my second, and a 7.5 week preemie for my third... was SUCH a relief.

I also had a good sized cup of real, raw milk, hot cocoa every night before bed for the last month or so... another great source of calcium and magnesium...

Thank you for the post everyone,

I have decided to get off of the licorice root. I heard that it can make you have high blood pressure, although I have been having low blood pressure the whole time I've been on it. Instead I will try a L-Glutamine powder by itself.  Do you know of any other reason why it is not good or safe?  I do not have the aloe vera juice with chunks that you described.I will have to look at Beeyoutifuls Bome Ami I haven't heard of it.  As for the raw milk, I can't have dairy, due to food allergies caused by the leaky gut.
Does anyone know about the MSM (Natural sulfur)?  Does anyone have a book or know a web site that gives a list of herb/supplements not ok to take during pregnancy?

Thanks for the help, anymore would be great.  Also look up herbs/supplements in any book you have, that might help give me some more answers.  Thank you.

I have a question about cod liver oil during pregnancy. I take the garden of life brand. It is very high in vit.D and vit A. Isn't it possible to get too much of these vitamins, and therefore be dangerous?

One more question if anyone is still reading this... I took berry well with my last pregnancy and my OBGYN said she was fine with echincea. My new doc. ( not an obgyn) made a comment about how she thinks echincea is NOT ok during pregnancy. Is she just trying to cover herself or is there a new study that has been done?
I went to the health food store and a customer there went on and on about how she does not take herbs during pregnancy, but goes the homepathic route instead. I don't even know the difference, but I bought something called: Oscillo.. Anybody familiar with this stuff? I am a little confused about the echincea thing. It almost seems better to use it then to end up with a stuffy nose or worse and need medicine that comes off the Walmart shelf???

Aloe Vera juice during pregnancy is great!  I've suffered horrible acid reflux with each pregnancy, until I found Aloe Vera juice.  I don't know how I would have gotten through without it!

I took about 1-2 ounces each night just before bed with a little water (I didn't love the taste, but it's not bad -- some people like it) and never had a problem again with the acid.  Just one warning, though, that I noticed.  It seems to have a diuretic effect, so drink a lot of extra water each day to avoid getting dehydrated!  It's easy to do during pregnancy...

Thanks for posting that JesiRaine...I tend towards bad reflux, especially at the end.  I'll look into that more and maybe try it out.

Aloe is also great at helping to keep the bowels going. But, it is also a diuretic so make sure you are drinking lots of water while taking it.

I use echancia during pregnancy with no problems.

Everyone reacts to herbs differently, especially during pregnancy, just use caution as you go. I can't drink the Mama's Red Raspberry brew from the BHS, even while well hydrated, I think I loose too much fluid. I had a headache for three days and finally figured it was the tea causing my problem. But, I know lots of woman that the tea has helped a great deal during pregnancy.

Thank you, Sunshine. Smiley I think this was the response I was looking for.... I used Berry Well with my last pregnancy, but with caution. Wink I did not get any of the flu shots this year, so I'm just trying to be prepared. Wink
