1) Is the flu virus more "resistent" to natural/homemade/herbal remedies?

2) If not, then why aren't these herbal things working this time?

3) I know the body's purpose for fever & coughing etc, but what is the purpose for achiness?

4) To relieve my achiness for a while so I can get things done, I've been popping Advil, which I know is not good....any other way to relieve achiness?

Hot epsom salt soaks?

I may be totally wrong in this, but I was told that there really is nothing you can do about a virus. It has to work its way out of your system.  You have to focus on strengthening your immune system and helping your symptoms. Bed rest really is helpful to your body when you are fighting the flu--saves your body's energy. Can you afford any rest today? And drink lots of fluids. The achiness is from loss of fluids and electrolytes in your cells from fever and other flu symptoms.

Yeah, I was doing stuff for my immune system & trying to ease symptoms naturally, and with common colds, it works fast!  But, with this flu, it took forever!  Oh, well, I'm finally starting to feel better, thank God.  Still congested & coughing, but no more fever or achiness.  Oh, and thanks for letting me know about the achiness!  I had no idea that it was because of that.

Seems to be that we have the beginnings of the flu over at our house, my little girl is the  first victim to fall sick. I 've  started her on GOOT, probiotic  and  she's sipping peppermint tea.
My question is for Forevergirl, however, someone else might know as well.
Last year I purchased Beka's video she did on herbs and different ways to use them from the welltellme store. I remember herbs she used for incense, for burning in a pan on the stove. If I remember correctly you used mullein???  Unfortunatly that down load is on our old computer and the welltellme store  is no longer available.

Does anyone know what herbs I might burn or use as incense  for the flu over here?

Hi,
Yes, Mullein was the main herb to burn. We also add pine needles (cut up with shears) and lavender flowers. This mixture is very good at killing air born bacteria and reducing coughs and sore throats.

Cow Colostrum will help balance the immune system, keeping the immune response reasonable (not too much phlegm).

Hope you get well soon!

Is Rebekah's video still available?  I once tried to buy it off WTM but was not able to complete the transaction (website wouldn't complete the transaction).

Some more flu thoughts...

sometimes the usual herbs for immune system will make your immune response worse, increasing phlegm misery, etc...  Elderberry syrup is not one of these. It balances your immune system... it's a good flu tonic. Same as the colostrum I recommended in the previous post.  Lots of baths with Eucalyptus oil also really helped us last year.

@ Veggie:
no the video isn't on WTM anymore. It cost more to keep the store open than the store ever made, so we shut it down. However, Gabe hopes to make the video, plus others and audios as well, available for free on 7XS soon. Just pray that he'll have the time and the tools he needs to do this. There are already audios available (Bible teaching) but hopefully there will be songs as well, and videos.

Thanks Beka! I have made your elderberry, bilberry tonic for a few  years now and we love it!  In Kansas, where we were from, we had  an elderberry winery close by that sells elderberry concentrate. Usually starting in Sept. through out the winter months we would take a tsp or so as an  immune booster.  It was getting too expensive for our family to be on that long, so when I learned of your tonic I started making that and that is a regular staple in our home  through out the winter months now...so thank you for sharing that Grin I couldn't find any reason why taking it everyday for several months would be bad , any thoughts on this?
I've also read your advice  over on welltellme with your flu experience from last year, that was very interesting about the immune boosters, I didn't realize that elderberry would be different so thanks for the tip!

Also with the incense, I believe you burned it in a pan lid , just on the stove burner or was it over a pan with water in it?? Do you think pine essential oil would work instead of the pine needles??  I don't have any of those in our yard, but I do have the essential oil.

Hey, Gabe just loaded that Practical Herbs video that I made a couple years ago. It is now available for free download here on 7xs! The directions on how to make the elderberry/bilberry tonic are on the video.

Yes, I think pine oil would work...

I burned the the crumbled, dried herbs in a dry lid which I put upside down over a gas burner, or sprinkled ontop of a wood burning stove. What you want is the dry smoke. You can also do steam though... the steam is better for a dry cough, and the smoke is better for drying up a cough.

Hi,

Sorry if this has been discussed.
I read the post on Swine Flu-and using BerryWell.  But,  I read that with the Swine Flu, elderberry should be discontinued, but not for regular flu--from the Beeyoutiful catalog. I am just a little confused.  We are dealing with the flu here, I called my ped., and went over the symptoms, they said that it may or may not be Swine Flu.  So, I am just not sure what to do.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Momof8 - I'd suggest using the Berry Well/ Elderberry and watch for how people respond:  if there is an improvement, a decrease in symptoms, I'd continue.  If there is no improvement an phlegm and other symptoms increase, I would discontinue use.

Just an idea!
Hope you are well soon!

Oh yeah? Awesome, I actually tried to order that video from the WTM Store a couple weeks ago, before I discovered it wasn't working lol.

Now, where did he post the video here?

ETA: Nevermind, found it!  Grin

This is a comment, not a question, but just wanted to share our experience here with the flu. The swine flu and other type of flu is running rampant down here in Louisiana and my daughter caught the bug. I was reading the swine flu thread at wtm and decided to try the link with the pine needle tea. Well, I said let's give it a try. Grabbed some pine needles(since we live in the middle of the piney woods) and followed the recipe and gave to my daughter. Within 30 to 45 minutes her fever had broken, no more vomiting or diarhea, no more aches and pains. Now she had only been showing symptoms for about 24 hours, but just that quick she was showing no symptoms. She spent the rest of the afternoon resting and slept  very well that night. Next day, she went to school. Call it coincidence?? I don't think so.

I am really confused now!  I have had 4 dc with the flu symptoms.   I took my dd in to the doctor because of possible tonsilitis.  The doctor said that it was most likely the flu.   She then said that they should still get immunized because you can get it again, and since not everyone in our house has gotten it.  I thought you couldn't get the same virus more than once.  She said that you could.  So, I have gone from relieved that I didn't have to make that decision about vaccination to totally confused and worried again.  Can anyone share their thoughts, thank you!

As far as I know it, you can only get it again if you get a different strain. Even if you DO get the flu shot, it is still possible to catch a different strain. Wink

Hey mom, congratulations, you and your kids have acquired natural immunity to a flu virus.  That particular one will not be bothering you for a long time; possibly for the rest of your life.  Before vaccinations existed, especially during plagues, it was those who had been afflicted and then recovered health, that cared for the sick.  They were really really immune.  This is a fact.  It was first observed before the time of Christ.  i'd have nothing to do with one that asserts the contrary.

As regards the other household members, by now the virus is either incubating, or getting creamed by their immune systems -  the latter could have happened while everyone else was sick.  For the 'incubaters'i guess you could get the jab, but there's no telling if the shot will guard against the infecting strain.  There's no way to tell if they're even susceptible to infection.  Its a shot in the dark.

There are millions of other strains that could bother you and your kids.  The strains included in a vaccine, may or may not be the ones that are active in your area, and getting the shot will only impart passive immunity to those few viruses for the season.  This passive immunity doesn't last a lifetime.  It requires boosters;  shot people need to be shot over and over.

Everyone wishing to escape death by pig flu can get a jab every year of their life, or strengthen their immune systems so that when they are exposed to it, their bodies can make their own antibodies, thus shielding their lives until they die in a car wreck.  Monthly, those maim and kill way more people, and there isn't all this fuss over that. hmmm

My Dh kept telling me that he loves this stuff and it works great... I had not used it as much as him, and am testing it out to build our immune systems. I think he was right. Smiley

I think some of us have the flu.  My Dh and I have been sick for a week and just when we think we are getting better we get a different symptom.  I have never been this sick for this long and this type of illness is new to us so I am thinking it is some flu bug.

It started with Dh, he got a sore throat bad headache  and then a couple of days later he got a fever and his body was in alot of pain especially his legs. His fever broke and he felt better then he got a cough and  congestion and now a dry cough.  I started the same way....sore throat bad headache, then a couple of days later I felt like I had been in a car wreak.  My hips were especially hurting and still do bother me a week later.  I got a fever it broke and then I got the cough sinus pressure and now the congestion and a yucky nose but unlike the others I have eye discharge and two very red and swollen eyes.  The 2 youngest are in the cough and congestion phase (wet coughs), my oldest in in the sore throat phase and my middle son has not gotten it yet.  My middle son is usually the one who gets everything, so this is funny to him.LOL Smiley

I've been doing garlic poultices, eating garlic, making peppermint tea, taking emergen C, resting what else could we do?  Does it sound like the flu?

Thanks for any advice and prayers.

I was able to read some of the info on this thread and saw this one in particular...... at the time I was feeling sore and feverish again with a terrible sinus headache.

I live right down the road from this place!! So, I went out and got some of this elderberry concentrate and am now well!  I have a tiny cough but that is all!  My oldest has not progressed and my 2 youngest are getting better too.  This elderberry stuff is awsome but it sure is expensive.  I will be looking into making Bekas tonic in the future.  Smiley  I still do not know what we have but I think it is/was the flu.
