One of my favorite memories of watching some old bible videos and looking through bible picure dictionarys in the past was to see the women grinding grain the old, old way, with two flat stones.   I have been wondering lately if this is a lost art. Have any of you tried this? I know that it is hard work, but I would love to try it someday, if I get the chance.

While many of the modern grain mills are micronizers, there are many out there that utilize either stone or steel burrs to grind.  Same premise, with modern technology...
This may not be what you are shooting for, but just grinding flour with one of these mills manually takes about an hour or more for 5-6 cups of flour.  I can imagine it would take many hours using a mortar/pestle or stones to obtain what we would consider in our modern minds to be an adequate amount.
So..no, I've not tried it myself, but let us know how it goes if you give it a try....

When we lived in the Southwest US we saw both Indians and Mexicans in rural areas who still grind grains using a dished out stone bowl and a stone mortar.   I've tried it and I'm glad that I'm able to buy mine already ground.

It certainly is hard work, but those who still use them are generally used to hard work.   Like anything, when you do this often, you get real good at it.

Reading a lot of Gabe's posts, we may all get the chance in the near future. I am sooo glad for modern conveniences and have my grain mill but it's good to have knowledge of how to do things without anything modern---just in case we have to. Knowledge is power! LOL  I know the stones the native americans use is really hard because if not you will eat your stone with your flour. The natives even have a joke about just that!!
