I was wondering how many hours many of us spend on the formal type schooling. We are feeling really burned out over here. Between schooling and chores, my children have little time for play lately and it is leaving us tired and unbalanced.

I must say, I am not much for the unschooling or laidback approach. My husband is college educated and is leaning toward a college education for our children (particularily sons). At least he wants them prepared and ready if they choose to go.

In the past we spent less time doing school, when using the Charlotte Mason method and more fun unit studies. But, with health issues and family responsibilities, I have had to ditch these efforts and go with the more formal textbook approach. I honestly think my husband is happier and more confident about the education the children are receiving with this new approach. And I do admit that I am not overwhelmed by the contant demands of gathering info and resources for my unit studies. I am the regimented structured type of individual.

Sooooo..... my question is...... How much free time should my children be having each day? They are doing school or chores most of the day. Some days they are getting no playtime at all and other days they do get more. I am worried that I am working them and consequently myself too hard.
