I've heard a lot of yall talk about memorizing Scripture, for prayer and for learning the Word. (This thread in particular was inspiring.)

So...what are some of the best ways to memorize Scripture...? Mostly I've been doing it line by line, reading it over and over, writing it down, then once it's down going on to the next verse. Is that the best way or does anyone have any other tips?

Hi andiclare,
good question, for me i learn scripture as a poem, not a rhyme per say, but  write poems and it seems to be the way my mind works so that is how i strive to learn scripture.

Others i know put the scripture to music, that seems to cement it into their brain.

I know everyone learns different, but for me it's old fashioned repetition that works the best.  Repeating out loud, writing over and over, etc.  Also, the scripture has to be meaningful for me or it's practically impossible for my brain to retain it.  For instance, I don't think I could ever learn the 'begats' unless they were somehow revealed to have a brilliant personal significance to me. I type things out over, and over, and over again. It's bad caus sometimes I start to zone out a bit and then  i dont learn anything.....like before, I realised I'd been typing  "O God, consider my medication". Meant to be "meditation".   Tongue

I am really interested in this also.

I have used Microsoft label templates on Microsoft Works and typed verses on them and printed them out on cardstock, tied them with a rubber band and walked around with them memorizing.

I have memorized tons of hms just by having my hymn book by the kitchen sink and singing them over and over.
That has been a real blessing to me.  When we have church I do not even need a hymnal because I know most of them by heart praise God.   I always felt that they would be needed strength to me in a time of persecution or distress.

I wish I knew scripture that well also.  Something that has helped me alot is reading one book of the bible every day for 30 days and then a new book the next month and so on.  It is a good way to become very familiar with books of the bible and what is in each chapter.

When I read the book Evidence Unseen by Darleen Diebler Rose she said that when she was imprisoned by the Japanese without her bible it did not matter to her because it was already in her heart and she could and did meditate on it there.

If you have never read that book I highly recommend it! Star
