I don't know if this is a bright idea or not, but I thought I'd broach the subject to see if there is any intrest in this area. First off, I think that a family survival camp would be profitable all the way around for a family, as well as those looking for fellowship. It would also gift us with possible life skills that could be something we never thought we'd use. Here are some ideas I've been pondering lately:

1. a week-long camp where families would bring their own food and tents and outdoor items. Water would have to be provided by camp. I don't know how bathrooms would work out...  Undecided
2. there have been several families in this forum that have been gifted with varying outdoor things they have learned, such as survival kits, emergancy medical basic aid skills, hunting w/ basic weapons/traps (not just guns), herbal knowledge, weather knowledge, building fires, finding food and water, building shelter, etc. to name just a few. These could be the topic of some of the classes that could be taught.
3. It could be like this: morning, classes (demonstrations). Afternoon, going out into the middle of nowhere in teams (w/ knowledgeable leader) and see who could be the first to: a, find water...b, build a fire...c, build cover, and d, find the way back to a designated area where the others are to gather back to report how they did, with such limited items as would have on hand. Working together would be emphasized, and the worse the weather the better  Shocked Roll Eyes Grin

I think it would be such a neat to bring together families with similar intrests like this so that we could not only learn from the teachers of the classes, but from each other as well.

I don't have much more time to write...This computer is only avalible to me for a little longer (and I say everything wrong when I'm in a hurry, lol), so I'll leave this as is and add on to it later if I see intrest and/ or think of anything that might be profitable to add.

Blessings to you, friends! Let me know what you think.

What a great idea!

"Survival" would be dramatically different in the varied climates we all live in, so small groups, in "local" areas would benefit greatly from something like this!  For myself, I think I would be interested in survival methods for different locations as well, as we never know exactly what God has planned for us... Perhaps we will move cross-country next year?  (Don't get me wrong, I don't wanna!! but, who knows?)

Anyway, VERY cool idea!!

Naturalgirl--- that would be sooooo fun. Too bad we dont all live close together. I think it would be cool to have Green Dean come and show us all the wild edible healthy weeds to eat and other cool stuff.

Finding a remote area to camp would be hard too, or at least finding one that isnt under gov control with tons of rules.

If I had a place to keep my dogs and could afford to go somewhere I would love doing more camping. No one I can think of would be excited about survival camping Sad but I sure would be.

I actually could do that kind of camping if I were to join up with one of the cival war reinactment teams. They dont just live in surivial mood for their shows but all during their time away to keep in the mood of it all. No modern thing is allowed other then medical devices.

Naturalgirl,  that sounds like something my family would love!  My boys are all the time checking out books on outdoor survival stuff from the library.

Our families favorite past time is camping, kayaking and canoeing.

My favorite part of camping is cooking over a fire.

I would love to have someone knowledgeable hiking with us and identify edible and medicinal herbs!  We have plantain down pat and have even helped fellow campers a couple times when they got stung by a bee.

Great idea!

Me too! I've shown several different people plantain, and even had one time where I had a very badly infected cut that healed up overnight because I used it (cleaned it and chewed it too!  Cheesy ).

Sounds like a large camping time for everyone really wouldn't be possible... not easilly, anyways. I suppose if there were such a thing as traveling survival teachers (like the reinactment teams) , that would be more convenient. On top of families working with trial and error to gain experience. Hm...

I have hesitated to post this because I keep wondering how it could all pull together, but thought I'd just throw it out and see if anyone can help. Our family has got a place available to host this camp and we would be willing to do this~ but  we  don't feel equipped to do the workshop (instruction) part.  as an earlier poster had stated, different areas of the country would require differing survival needs (we are in East Texas).  We have 32 easily accessible acres (woods and pasture) that are quite private, there would be no "government" problems here, there is a spring-fed creek, though depending on the weather it could be low (but water can be hauled from our house), we would probably have to get some porta-potties (donations toward this cost would be appreciated). Anyway! we are willing to be host and hostess, if anyone else would like to take the ball for the organization part...any takers??? Shocked

Oh Boy!!! (dancing a jig...) Dear papa God, can I go, pleeeeeze?!!!!  Could it be possible to work something like this out? Man. I really doubted that anything would even hint at making this a possibility.
Hm... I do have two tents - I could share one...and a portable water filter that can be used if we need to use water from a creek. I have a large old cast iron pot for cooking over a fire...

IF this would happen, I can see that LOTS of planning would be needed. Like, a list of things everyone would need to buy for their survival kits, how much food to bring, and who would be willing to share/teach, let alone each of our families working towards planning our lives around a "drop-out" week.

lol. I had better quit writting now and get my head out of the clouds  Grin  It would be fun though  Smiley Smiley

I just wanted to add that October or November would be the best time of year here as far as the weather goes~ or if a later time is desired, March or April.

This sounds great....we (our family) have talked about our desire to go out camping some time this summer yet. We have never done it as a family. And the survival thing would be awesome!  I do hope something comes together!   ~Moses

Well, it is still in the thinking, planning, prep stages~and we are hoping that it will come together for late this fall. If you are at all interested(in attending) or  have any skills to offer that would benefit in a survival situation,  please let us know.

Our family would love this and the location would be convenient for us also. If we're talking East Texas. We have a tent that sleeps about 8 or 10. Really interested in the hands on learning of location of herbs and identifying. Sounds wonderful.

Here are some of the things we've thought of for this 'Texas Family Survival Camp'.  If we are going to do it for the Oct - Nov time-frame we'll have to get on the ball.  I've built this around a four-day weekend.

Some of this is just notes to be filled in later or initial thoughts.

Concept:  Families come together to impart survival skills to each other in order to equip believers for rough times.  Building skills while practicing what you previously learned. Start with setting up shelters and building a fire then move to navigation.

Thursday:
•   Arrive mid-day
•   Orientation and schedule
•   Shelter building
•   Set-up individual camps in same area
•   Making fire (community fire)
•   Worship
•   Bed down

Friday:
•   Breakfast
•   Water procurement and purification
•   Practice building water catchment devices
•   Lunch Break (networking, family time, working on camp)
•   Food procurement and preparation
•   Break - Hike?
•   Environmental dangers (short class)
•   Break –Hike?
•    Survival Mind (short class)
•   Dinner
•   Worship
•   Bed down

Saturday:
•   Breakfast
•   Hiking with heavy load
•   Break
•   Navigation class and practical
•   Break camp and navigate to new site (individual destinations for each family marked by different colored ribbons)
•   Set up new camp and have lunch as family
•   Navigate to common area
•   First Aid class
•   Break (networking and/or family time)
•   Signaling (short class)
•   Dinner (networking and/or family time)
•   Community fire and worship
•   Bed down

Sunday:
•   Breakfast
•   Recap as needed
•   Break camp
•   Goodbyes

Time:
•   Fall 2009 (October-November)
•   3-4 day weekend

Activities/Courses:
•   Land Navigation - Ken
•   Building Shelters
•   Starting A Fire
•   Water Procurement
o         Purifying
o         Rainwater harvesting in nature
•   Food Procurement
o         Trapping
o         Cooking
o         Fishing
o         Berries
•   First Aid - Ken
o         Building a kit
o         6 essential steps
•   Hiking with a heavy pack/what goes in the pack? - Ken
•   Signaling
•   Environmental Dangers
o         Snakes and other critters
o         Flash flooding
•   Survival Mind – priorities and preparation – Ken
•   Cordage from nature
•   Making primitive tools?
•   Evening worship/Bible reading: Fathers
•

Who is invited:
•   7xSunday, Urban Exodus, Belize Now and Well Tell Me forums
•

How many invited:
•   What can the land handle?
•   What size groups?
•   Round Robin classes?  (don’t think this would be a good idea unless we had designated instructors that aren’t involved in the learning)
•

Costs: (not for profit, instructors from among ourselves)
•   Instructors (if we have to pull someone in from outside the group)
•   Porta-potties
•   Fire wood
•

Liability:
•   Sign waivers for registration

Young Children’s Activities: Two way radios to stay connected to the parents.
•   Nature hikes
•   Botany (i.e. leaf rubbings, collections, etc)
•

Instructors:  whatever teaching tools i.e. white board easel, print outs/hand outs,
•   Those attending the camp

Logistics:
•   Food:  Each family brings their own according to instruction sheet
•   Water:  same as above
•

What to bring:
•   Medical kit:
•   Basic survival kit: (i.e. compass, flint/striker, socks, water purification,
•   Tents:
•   Food:
•   Water:
•   Back packs for whole family:
•   Flashlights and lanterns
•   Rain gear

I've put my name next to things I could teach without too much difficulty.  The biggest challenge for us is finding someone who is smart on herbs and edible plants in the wild to teach that to the group.

Also, we are looking at some State Parks in Texas to give us some more room to practice some of these skills, particularly land navigation and food and water procurement.

I'm curious what you all think about this list and what should be added or taken out.

I see there is a section for kids, but would it be possible for kids to stay with parents non-stop? Is there some reason it may not be good for kids to be there? Good outline though!

Yea, ideally the children will stay with parents throughout.  We were just thinking there may be sometimes when the parents need to concentrate on a particular class or activity and children's activities would more or less be available for such times.

Having a hard time determining if there is enough interest to pull this off.  If there are folks out there that would want to come to an event like this in Texas then we'll put something together.  Let us know if you are seriously interested.

Ok, thanks.  Smiley

I know we would be very interested in something like this, but I doubt we would be able to come this year.  I hope others go though and maybe it can become a yearly thing.
