Dresses from movies

Ok so I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who has ever watched a movie and seen some of the outfits the ladies wear and want to recreate the whole thing for myself. I figured it would be nice to get y'alls input and ideas on how you made that happen. And generally just share
Have you ever made an outfit based on a movie?
How did it turn out?
Is it something you would wear in public
?
Right at this moment I really like the clothes from the Love Saga movies based on Janette Oake's books, mainly Belinda's (Love's Unfolding Dream). Besides that I also want to learn to make vintage (like 1930s ish) clothes

Ooh good topic! I did the same thing when I was younger, only it wasn't a movie it was Little House on the Prairie LOL. I would wear my hair in pigtails and made some nice calico aprons. The more elaborate clothing I couldn't really do, but it's a great idea.
I imagine your first course of action would be to google what you're trying to do. For instance I just did a quick search and found a
pattern for one of the dresses from Titanic
on ebay.
Here is someone detailing step-by-step how they recreated a
dress from the movie Twilight
.
For something like the Love Saga movies which weren't in wide release, I'd recommend just doing a google seatch for vintage dresses from that time period, pioneer Americana clothing, etc. and just try to find a pattern that most resembles what you want to make. HTH

I love the clothes they wore on the Titanic movie too...
The other day I was looking at some green curtains thinking that since we've moved I don't have a window for them and thought "Maybe I'll just make a skirt or dress out of them." got a flashback of Gone With the Wind and Scarlett O'Hara tearing down her Mother's green velvet curtains to make herself a dress to go see Rhett Butler in.

I have made dresses for theater productions as well as adapted some vintage dress patterns for everyday wear. I love the vintage styles! My daughters love the Sense and Sensibility patterns here;
Patterns
If you Google vintage dress patterns, you will find a lot of great choices. Another place to find patterns is anywhere that re-enactors congregate. Here in the MidWest, we are able to find Civil War re-enactments.
ridgerunner, You must be fighting the desire to be a Scarlett! Or maybe Julie Andrews - Sound of Music!
btw - I made myself a jumper from upholstery fabric.

Ladyhen,
I've always wondered if the pretty yellow dresses in your avatar are a vintage pattern, like Jane Austin/Sense and Sensibility era? They are adorable (but then the models are pretty cute too
)

Thanks! Those are my granddaughters and the dresses came as gifts. But that is the style my girls liked when they were young, too. They are getting harder and harder to find, with styles that are NOT cute and feminine being in vogue for the past few years.
Two of my sisters and I had girls born all the same year. They were so cute when they were all together.
The year that they were all 5 or 6 years old, I made blue gingham Dorothy Gale dresses for all of them, like in 'Wizard of Oz'. We were also able to find some cute red 'ruby slippers' for them. All that I did was take a simple dress pattern in the right size and add some details to it. Not too hard, imo, but I'm told that I have a gift for adapting patterns.

I agree here! This is why I am learning to sew. I love putting my dd in dresses and skirts, but so much of it is too short, too tight, too revealing or downright ugly! I love the dresses of yesteryear, especially the 1800's era.

I use patterns from Folkwear.com. They have prairie dresses and titanic dresses. They have one like in Sarah, plain and tall. a walking skirt I LOVE because it is so flowing and comfortable. They even have some in children's sizes.

I'm watching Sound of Music right now - made me think of this thread.
I also love the oldest daughter's dress in the beginning when she goes outside to meet the telegram guy...

My whole family LOVES that movie, but I gotta say the thing with the dresses has always bugged me. Do you really think it's possibly she could have made ALL THOSE dresses from the drapes in that one room? LOL ok maybe it's just me...

Thank you for sharing all these sites ladies! Now all I have to do is learn to sew
I love the whole Jane Austen era styles...they're probably one of my favourites. It is so sad that we have to go so out of the way to find clothing that helps guard our feminine mystic without demeaning it.

Well I'm back...finally... and I have to say I'm fairly proud of my self. I was able to make most all of my bother's costume (just the robe part) with a little help from my mom (she had to hem for me because I was running late).
My dear brother decided that instead of telling me a week or more in advance what he wanted to dress-up as fpr our Pumpkin Patch Festival, he would tell me the day of. So the whole day was spent trying to throw together a Jedi "like" costume; which included sewing a robe. This was the first time I have ever done something big (designing [ie tracing him on the fabric] and sewing) myself (for the most part)....hopefully I can get a picture
The last costume I made (Sir Peter Wolf's Bane) I made my mom sew
Anyway I guess I'm just bragging on myself here...sorry

Hey JP, I would love to see pics! I love seeing what others have created, it gets my creative mind working.
Also, has anyone seen the movie enchanted where she makes herself new dresses everyday out of the curtains and furniture in the new york apartment? I know it's a total sound of music "rip-off" but I still loved that scene and the clothes she made.

I loved that part too. I loved that the curtains were still hanging showing the dress cut out! I always wondered in the Sound of Music if those curtains really were enough material to make clothes for all those kids? I think I get too caught up in the technical side!

So I just finished watching Pride and Prejudice (newer one) *sigh*
and I absolutely really like all the dresses (for the most part). Do you ladies know what era that is and if there are patterns for those (or something like them)? I mean authentic looking ones too

Back again
This time my delimma is Thumbelina's dress (the Warner Bros version). The only things I get when I search online are related to the new Barbie movie
Have any of you made a dress similar? What style would you call her dress?
Here are a few links to pictures:
