Survival Skills Fiction Recommendations

Thank you everyone for your replies to my Science question. I am also wanting to add some fiction/biographies to our health/herb studies. I have already thought of Swiss Family Robinson, maybe My Side of the Mountain? Any survival/living off the land type fiction suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Sign of the Beaver is great! By the way, with Swiss Family Robinson, there's all kinds of different translations. Some are much better than others -- make sure you get one of the older versions!

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe (maybe for the older kids?),
Where the Lilies Bloom by Vera Cleaver (about a girl who's Dad dies and she supports her family as a wild-crafter herbalist book/movie)
Island of the Blue Dolphins by can't remember author (based on true story about a girl left stranded on an island and how she survived for many years.)
My side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George (book/move both good)
Diary of an Early American Boy by Eric Sloane (great book based on a year out of a dairy of a boy in 1805)
The Little House on the Prairie series (actually quite a bit of practical knowledge included in these books.)

The Little House series. You can learn tons about preserving foods, keeping warm, building a log house, etc. from that series.

Beka, you listed all of the books I was thinking of... except Where the Lillies Bloom... I'll have to check that one out!
There's a thread on this subject over on Urban Exodus somewhere...

There are also a couple of books by Gary Paulsen, "Hatchet" and "The River" about a boy having to survive harsh conditions alone. He has other books that I probably would not recommend though.
