I am hoping to get opinions on teaching character.  Do you use a character type book with stories and lessons, etc. or just teach naturally?  I know like anything, character traits must be practiced and a lot of  the training happens when dc are young.  Just wanting some opinions, thank you.

We of course read the Bible, Keys for Kids (free), Girl of Beauty or Wise Guys, Rod and Staff school material, most of our school curriculum centers around godly character and the Bible.  Jonathan Park and Adventures in Odyssey.  Reading books, biographies, etc.

You can use pretty much ANYTHING you do, watch, listen to, see, hear, etc.  Of course, without being gossipy, God gives you people all around you too, we talk about character traits in others and what the consequences of those are (NOT being Judgement either!)

I asked my 11 yo ds:  "I learned from you, Daddy and no one else!"

I don't agree with him there, but that's a kid's answer for you, haha...

LOTS of PROVERBS!  I truly feel that if my children have a good working knowledge of the Proverbs they will be okay in life.  It addresses sooo many of life's issues and the foolish/wise, etc.  Also using scripture daily as things come up, i.e. It is to your glory to overlook an offense, Do unto others, Think of others first or Esteem others as better than yourself, and suddenly I'm drawing a blank~but you get the gist.  There are only 1,000 of these that get used in just a day!  LOL!  (((((HUGS)))))  sandi

You are teaching character every day.  Our children learn about character up close and personal when they observe us in every day life.  I constantly have to remind myself that there are 5 young people learning character by my actions and reactions throughout the day.
As for me personally if I notice that there is a certain character trait that I want to instill in the children that I possess it first.  If I don't, I pray that God give me wisdom and insight to change this in myself.  Naturally my children follow by example.  I'm sorry that I don't have a book to suggest.

Keepers of the Faith has some great material that I would already have, if only I had children.  Cheesy I haven't seen it in person yet, but I have been so impressed with everything else they have that they will be my first option.

When I was a teacher in a small private school, we used Character First. Character First was really good and I loved it, but I did not like how they didn't use it very much in a Christian way, which the reason why is because they sell their product to public schools. Too bad they didn't have a Christian one for Christians and Christians schools. Also, when we did that they did not sell their curriculum to private family individuals, you had to be a church, school, workplace etc. They may have changed since then (5 years ago) but I don' know.

Ditto Proverbs. I keep hearing that reading the Proverb of the day helps kids have less trouble with se*ual temptations.  I am trying to get as much of Proverbs as I can into my boys' heads before puberty Cheesy

Aside from that, we like the Proverbs People cirriculum from www.thelearningparent.com

I also like Pearables stories. Smiley

We use a curriculum that is extremely strong on teaching character with a KJV Biblical base.

http://www.aceministries.com/curriculum/Default.aspx

I wasn't able to pull up a page with a picture of them, but in their catalog they sell character posters that are just beautiful.  They have a nice picture with a Bible verse that applies to the character trait.
