This may seem like a dumb question, but does anyone have any tips, tricks for getting dog p@@p off shoes?  My dd stepped in some today while playing out in the yard.  Not one, but both shoes (tennis shoes).  It's packed into the grooves of the shoes really well and both shoes have a sizeable mound of the stuff firmly packed on both the soles and up the sides (don't ask me how -- it hasn't happened in 5 1/2 years of living here and having a dog in the yard, but today was apparently the DAY!!)  I set the shoes out in the sun for the rest of the day, but with the cold I'm not sure how much good it did.  My question is, how do I get the stuff COMPLETELY off?  Can these shoes be salvaged or will they forever stink?  Thanks for any tips anyone can share!

LOL!  (First, are you feeding commercial dog food, or are you feeding a "species-appropriate raw food" diet?  It won't help you right now, but for any possible future "events", real food will make a HUGE difference in the consistancy and smell of dog poo.   Grin)

On to the issue at hand (or foot!)  Cheesy :

Take a butter knife and dig into each area of tread, twisting the knife slightly to scrape out the poo.  Then run under warm water to wash most of the loosened poo off.  Then take an old toothbrush, or the like, and using a mixture of warm water, apple cider vinegar, and a little dishsoap, you can scrub the tread (and sides) thoroughly.  Rinse well.  If there is still a bad smell, you can fill the sink with a small amount of hot water (not higher than the shoes' tread), add a good deal of baking soda and let the shoes sit in the soda water for an hour or so.  Rinse again and let dry.

This should take care of most the smell -- and a day or two "clean" should air them out enough to be passable.   Grin

I've used the sprayer attachment on my water hose with good results. Don't try to keep from getrting the shoes wet, just blast them and then soak them in a bucket of hot water with amonia or viegar to get the residual stink off.

I've stepped in dog poop more times than I can count.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Scrape all you can off & then scrub the rest out of the groves with an old toothbrush under running water. Since it's cold out doing the toothbrush scrubbing under the bathtub spicot works. The scrub the fabric with the toothbrush & dish soap. Rinse well. Soaking in baking soda if needed helps with the smell. HTH Blessings ~herbalmom

If you just can't get the smell out the product I talk about in this post works REALLY well. Chances are you won't need it though.

There's also Nature's Miracle enzyme spray that you can get at PetSmart, WalMart, etc.

Thank you soooo much everyone!  I wasn't sure if anyone would take on this "delicate" subject!  Roll Eyes

A couple more questions I have:  Does the stuff need to be dried out before digging it out or blasting it off, or does it matter?

Also, taking a vote here, what is the consensus on running the shoes through the washing machine?  Good idea?  Bad idea?

RunAmokFarm:  I wish dear doggie was on a natural raw diet, but no she is not.  But I have heard a raw diet makes a big difference in odor.  Must be nice!   Grin

Depending upon the tennis shoes, a washing machine job may be just fine.  Some shoes hold up really well... and some will completely fall apart, so it is a bit of a gamble.

As to the natural diet -- yeppers, too many years of cleaning "Poo-shoes" has left me REALLY happy with the natural diet!!  Haven't had to clean anyone's shoes in years... the poo is a very different consistancy, and it doesn't "squish" into the shoe tread, and it doesn't stink like commercial dog food poo.  Definitely the very BEST-EST dog poo out there!   Cheesy

I always clean it off right away. My dogs are on a raw diet but the last house we lived in had a large UNfenced yard & an aquaduct ran along the property line so we had lots of dogs in our yard & I stepped in my share of dog poop from dogs on reg commercial dog food.  Tongue Tongue

As far as the washing machine, you still want to clean off as much as you can first before you put them in the washer. Probably want to wash them by themselves in the washer so the poop doesn't get onto anything else.

I have teen & young adult men in the house so all their tennis type shoes end up going through the washing machine at some point or another.  Tongue Most of them hold up just fine.

Yes, raw fed dogs poop is much smaller, drier & smells but doesn't stink like it does from commercial food. Much easier to clean up as well.

BTW- anytime you step in poop outside, rubbing the bottom of the shoe hard on grass helps get it off. Might not have grass this time of year but it's good to know.

Thank you again Ladies!  Your advice is very helpful and I feel well-armed for my attack on the poo shoes tomorrow -- I just can't face it tonight!  Tongue  They spent the afternoon out in the sun and are "airing" out in the garage for the night.  So tomorrow I shall face off with the offending material, knife in hand, pressure washer if need be, and then into the washing machine they shall go!   Then we shall see who wins!  Wink  Thanks again!

Also, a toothpick helps a lot when trying to reach into those skinny grooves.  Don't ask me how I know....   Roll Eyes

I just wanted to add that if you can't handle the thought of  using a butter knife in the grooves, a stick works well too.  And  a good long walk through wet grass can really help, but you might have a bit too much poo for that to help this time.

I'm sorry... My initial thought was, move to the country and buy a farm.  You'll step in so much and so many different types of poo, you'll get use to it.  Not real helpful, huh?  Roll Eyes

Vinegar/water solution and an old scrub brush.
If it got tracked into your carpet, and you cant get the smell out... sprinkle new dry coffee grounds into the carpet, let it sit a while and vaccum up.  It's a great deodorizer.
