Help me find foods.
«
on:
January 28, 2010, 03:41:02 PM »
During my last pregnancy I developed a perforated appendix, which leaked into my abdomen for 'quite some time' (as the surgeon put it) before Batman was born. I believe that my body created antibodies to all of our familiar foods during that time, because it was all leaking right out into me. Since Batman's birth, we have been dealing with extreme food sensitivities in him. Within about a month after his birth Batman developed eczema and has severe reactions to most things I would normally eat. His eyes even swell up if I slip and eat things that cause a reaction.
The problem is, I'm having a hard time coming up with new things to eat!
The list of things that I know he reacts to are:
Beef (we bought a whole beef just about the time we believe my appendix became perforated)
pork
lamb
corn
soy (it's in everything... I don't generally eat just soy products but did have more soy sauce than ever before because I craved Chinese a lot)
tomatoes
potatoes
wheat
gluten
oatmeal
eggs
dairy
tree nuts
peanuts
coconut
balsamic vinegar
red wine
grapes
raisins
coffee
Other things that
may
be causing a slight or delayed reaction that I am having a hard time pinning down:
thyme
rice
cumin
cayenne
green beans
quinoa
bananas
garlic
ghee
Now, those foods are all things that I ate or cooked with extensively when I was pregnant.
Foods that I know that I can eat and not cause a reaction in him are:
chicken
turkey
salmon
millet
lettuce
carrots
celery
olive oil
sunflower seeds (sun butter)
broccoli
cauliflower
cabbage
spinach
squash
green peas
sage
oregano
rosemary
lemon
apples
cherries
pinto beans
green tea
honey
onion
Most of these foods I didn't have much during my pregnancy mostly due to aversions. I tried several times to choke down salad or broccoli during that pregnancy, but after a couple of bites I'd be in the bathroom... so I gave up trying.
So here's my question. (finally) Can you help me come up with some new foods that aren't listed above, to extend what feels like a very limited diet and get a better range of nutrition? I come from a southerly place, where gravy is it's own food group
, so just thinking of new foods to try has been a challenge for me.
Oh, and I developed an allergy to shellfish during that pregnancy... so that one is out too.
TIA!

Lentils? I like to sprout them and make lentil soup, but the soup is good even without them sprouted. I was going to post my recipe but just about everything I put in it EXCEPT the lentils is on your reaction list, so...
BTW, I just love hearing you so casually talk about Baby Batman!
Makes me smile every time!
Edited to add: Since you can handle peas, what about split pea soup? I make mine with curry and olive oil, very tasty. Don't how the curry would be for you since I think it contains some of your reaction spices...
Edit to add again: Avacados? You could make guacamole a simplified guacamole with lemon juice, salt, whatever else you can handle to have with your chicken for something different. Avacados have lots of the good fats too, so that would help you get those in your diet.
Maybe asparagus? I saw that you can handle pinto beans, what about black beans for something different?

OK, since allergenic foods are listed within food families I'm going to take some of your allowed foods & list the foods within that family. Also a few families that you don't have listed at all that maybe you can eat.
Maybe it will give you some ideas of where to start with other foods to try. I've added a couple of notes in
purple
from what I know of allergies & food families.
I got this list from
this web page.
I only took a quick look at the site but it looks like it might be very helpful in figuring it all out.
Apple Family - Rose Family NOTE: Strongly related to Birch family
(The apple family is part of the bigger rose family)
Apple, Apple Cider, Apple Vinegar, Apple Pectin, Crabapple, Quince
Arrowroot: Arrowroot
Berry: Blackberry, Boysenberry, Dewberry, Loganberry, Strawberry, Youngberry. (see also Apple family), Raspberry.
also part of the Rose family
Buckwheat: Buckwheat, Coccolaba, Garden Sorrel, Rhubarb
(Ed note: these are not grains)
Citrus: Angostura bitters; Citrange; Citron; Grapefruit; Kumquat; Lemon; Lime; Orange; Tangerine
Composite Family (Aster): Absinthe; Artichoke; Artichoke, Jerusalem; Boneset Tea; Burdock; Calomel; Camomile; Cardoon; Celtuse; Chicory; Dandelion; Endive; Escarole; Head Lettuce; Lettuce, Leaf ; Lettuce; Oyster Plant, Salsify; Safflower; Sesame Seeds/ Oil; Sunflower/ Oil/ Seeds; Tarragon; Vermouth; Vermouth (Ragweed); Vermouth (Pyrethrum); Yarrow.
Flax - Linseed oil, flaxseed, flaxseed oil
Ginger: Arrowroot, Cardamon, Ginger, Turmeric
Goosefoot (Beet): Beet, Sugar; Chard, Kochia, Lambs Quarters, Spinach, Thistle.
Quinoa is also part of the Goosefoot family
Gourd (Melon): Casaba; Cantaloupe; Cucumber; Honey Dew; Muskmelon; Persian Melon; Pumpkin; Squash; Vegetable Marrow; Watermelon, Zucchini.
tends to be low allergenic
Heath: Cranberry, Bearberry, Blueberry, Huckleberry, Wintergreen.
Holly: Mate. (tea that people use as a coffee sub
)
Honeysuckle: Elderberry.
Iris: Saffron.
Laurel: Avocado, Bay Leaves, Camphor, Cinnamon, Laurel, Sassafras.
Legume:Acacia; Acacia Gum; Alfalfa; Arabic; Black-eyed pea; Carob; Carob (St. John's Bread); Cassia; Chick Pea; Field Pea; Green Bean; Green Pea; Guar gum; Jack bean; Karaya Gum; Kidney bean; Lentil; Licorice; Lima bean; Locust Bean Gum; Mungo Bean; Navy Bean; Peanut; Peanut oil; Pinto Bean; Soybean; Soybean oil/flour/lecithin; Split Pea; String Bean; Talca Gum; Tamarind; Tonka bean; Tragancanth Gum; Urd Flour.
Lily: Aloes, Asparagus, Chives, Garlic, Leek, Onion, Shallot, Sparsparilla.
Mallow: Cottonseed meal, Cottonseed oil, Okra, Gumbo, Althea root tea.
Mint: Basil, Bergamot, Betony (Chinese artichoke) Catnip, Horehound, Marjoram, Menthol, Mint, Oregano, Pennyroyal tea, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage, Savoury, Spearmint, Thyme.
Morning Glory: Jicama, Sweet Potato, Yam.
Very NON allergenic family
Mustard: Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Canola (rapeseed), Cauliflower, Celery Cabbage, Chinese Cabbage, Collard, Colza Shoots, Kale, Kohlrabi, Kraut, Horseradish, Mustard, Mustard Greens, Radish, Rutabaga, Turnips, Watercress.
Also Mustard seed
Parsley: Angelica, Anise, Carrots, Celery, Celeriac, Caraway, Celery Seed, Coriander, Cumin, Dill, Fennel, Parsley, Parsnips, Sweet Cicily, Water Celery.
Also, yellow peas since you can eat green peas.
Here's a post of mine with a yellow pea soup recipe.
I've made it a bunch of times since I first posted that & it's VERY versatile. It's just a bland soup (doesn't taste like green pea soup) that you really can season it however you want.
Try sprouting anything on your allowed list that can be sprouted. It makes for different flavors & textures.

Perforated appendix? Holy Tissues, Batman! (sorry
)
Moose, barley, and wow did these ladies post a lot of ideas. Took some of the words out of my mouth (loganberries, buffalo, buckwheat -- not really wheat -- and sprouting things) and then they went miles ahead.
Praying for you guys.
PM me if you can eat avocados, because up there I'm thinking you're going to pay what, $18.37 a piece? Unless maybe you grow them in your living room. Can you eat chocolate? We, too, have made chocolate pudding from avocados, and love love love it.

See! That's what I love about this place. I knew you guys would be able to help.
Thank you!
As I was walking throught Costco I realized a few things I needed to add to my lists...
Can't have:
Chocolate
strawberries
cinnamon
maple syrup
Can have:
avocado
sweet potatoes
blue berries
raspberries
cucumbers
And yes... we pay a good price for the avocado's, but Costco helps on that one. 10 bucks for 4 or 5 I think...
I'll have to check a receipt or something.
These are a wonderful help. Thanks again ladies.

Figs? Pumpkin seeds (since you can eat squash)?
If so, then PM me if you can't get them at a low, low price.

LOL. I have to admit, I didn't get it the first time I read this... (in my defense we had people coming to visit and I was trying to find foods to eat so they didn't feel bad eating a big ole ham in front of me and my bowl of chicken broth and veggies.)

As far as chocolate goes, find carob that you like. Some are better than others.
Since you can have sweet potatoes, they are really good for stick to the ribs, fill you up & should be a big help esp since you can't eat many of the grains. Helps also with the smooth, comfort food mouth feel also that we're looking for in potatoes, etc.
How about sweet potato oven fries?

How does carob 'work'? Does it have dairy in it? Does it melt when baked or heated like chocolate? Could you make, say, brownies, using carob?
I'm going to wiki to find out exactly what carob is...

Here's a soup we really like:
2 quart of chicken broth.
3/4 quart of fermented veggie juice (after you eat the veggies, you use the remaining liquid)
cubed chicken
4 slices of ginger root.
chunks of carrots (when the carrots are tender then add:)
chunks of cabbage
A dash or two of naturally fermented soy sauce.
Sea Salt and Pepper
Remove ginger root and serve.
Very nutritious and the kids love it.
Also... it sounds to me like what has happened is that due to the leak in your gut, your baby used up his store of enzymes and minerals that break down those foods (among other things) as his body was trying to deal with them. One thing that might help him recover faster is a liquid mineral supplement (activates enzymes) and a mild chewable enzyme supplement. Just crush it and put it under his tongue. I would try this just before he eats.
OR - you take the mineral and enzyme supplement. He should get it through you to some extent. I think, along with the fermented foods, this will help both him and you heal faster.

Carob comes in powder & you can get it in chips, squares, candy, etc. The powder is like baking cocoa & the other stuff it depends on the ingredients as to it being non dairy, etc.
Can you have flax or another egg sub that works for baking? Also, can you have fully cooked garbanzo beans? If so, I have a recipe in mind that I think you can tweak so you can eat it.
That soup recipe sounds good Beka. When you make it, do you cook the fermented veggie juice or do you cook the veggies in the chicken broth, let it cool a little & then add the fermented veggie juice to keep it raw & keep the enzymes, probiotics, etc alive?

Yes, Beka, I'd like to know how you added the veggie juice as well. It does sound like a yummy soup and I have everything on hand to make it. Sounds like dinner to me.
herbalmom, I have been using flax only for an egg substitute... but baked goods seem to be so hard on my stomach and on Batman too, so we aren't really doing baked goods just yet, but I'm looking forward to it.... Just curious, is it the bean cake recipe? I think I saw it on WTM recently. It sounds good.

I like to add the fermented juice last, but I've wondered if there is any point since the broth is very hot anyway? Mixing it in to the hot broth probably kills the enzymes and probiotics... maybe not all of them though. The flavor is great, in any case!

Maybe let the broth cool some & then add the fermented juice? It probably would still kill the enzymes & probiotics but maybe a few survive.
At the very least, it would add good flavor & be easier to digest than reg veggie juice. Thinking (typing) out loud here- it could be severed as a warm soup instead of a hot soup if the broth is allowed to cool more & then the fermented juice added. Many of the raw soup recipes are served just warm rather than hot.
D&L- yes, I was thinking of Milmuth's choc garbanzo bean cake. When you can eat baked goods again it should be easy to digest. Try sprouting the garbanzos first & then cooking them yourself until
completely
cooked rather than using canned. Would be easier to digest that way.
Here's a link to the recipe:

Just thought of something- I understand that baked goods are a problem but what about pancakes? The texture is different & maybe it would be easier to digest? I'm sure that recipe could be tweaked to make pancakes once you get to the point where you can eat them.

OK, I went out and bought NOW brand chewable enzymes
http://www.nowfoods.com/Products/ProductsbyCategory/Category/M101620.htm?cat=Digestive%20Support
and chewable probiotics
http://www.nowfoods.com/Products/ProductsbyCategory/Category/M100420.htm?cat=Digestive%20Support
I also got an ionic trace mineral supplement
http://www.nowfoods.com/Products/ProductsbyCategory/Category/M003787.htm?cat=Minerals
Here's to healing!
I'm eating saurkraut and fermented veggies a lot. I also had a little pork, and he hasn't had a flare from it yet. So that is promising.

thank you! i did note both ingrediants. the probiotics are for the girl, and she is terribly allergic to milk protein, but hasn't had a problem with lactose in the past... but i will be watchful. i'm switching her over to this probiotic, along with eating the saurkraut for probiotics, so i can give the more expensive, milk free product on the baby.
the enzymes maltodextrin is actually from barley in this product. i know that could be an issue so again, i will be watching carefully. it appears that mo has healed a lot since we began on this journey. i did find this:
Quote
Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is gluten free. It can be made from a variety of starches, including corn, potato, rice or wheat. However the source does not matter because maltodextrin is such a highly processed ingredient that the protein is removed, rendering it gluten free. If wheat is used to make maltodextrin, "wheat" will be appear on the label. Even in this case, the maltodextrin would be gluten free.
found here:
http://www.glutenfreeliving.com/ingredient.php
even so, i was careful to make sure it wasn't from potatoes or corn because batman reacts to those foods so badly.
i do appreciate your watchful eye on that. it's very helpful to have another set of eyes helping me pick out any hidden dangers. with so many things to be watchful of, sometimes i miss something.
sorry for the lack of caps, i'm one handed right now.

Have you tried soaking grains overnight (or longer) in a acid medium Lois? This might really help you as far as having tummy trouble after eating something baked. If you go on youtube, and type in Sally Fallon, there is a 3 part "series" (the first 10 minutes of 3 DVD's of her lecture) in which she explains why soaking the grains helps you digest them so much better. As soon as I am up and about and back to my normal self I will be making a serious effort to sprout EVERY grain before I turn it into bread, or like even rice before I cook it. I'll probably write about my "experiments" on my blog,
http://rejoicingevermore.blogspot.com
Hopefully my knee will fully heal soon!
I've also been thinking about trying to inoculate my kefir with Garden Of Life's HSO's. Do you have any kefir grains? You can make water kefir with milk kefir grains, they just wont grow any more. You could throw the first couple of batches out until the milkiness is gone.
I would say the more beneficial bacteria you can get in your gut the better. I would be eating as many cultured foods as possible to promote quick healing.
I just found a really yummy recipe for ginger ale, this thingy wont let me go back to see if you can have these ingredients so I hope you can! Boil 2 gallons of water with 2 T powdered ginger or about 1 1/2 C shredded fresh ginger. Cool slightly and add in 2 C honey. Cool to just barely warm and add in 1/4 tsp baking yeast (or wine yeast) let it sit for 2 days, then bottle it and let it sit for another day. And enjoy! If you can't have the yeast then just bottle it immediately, it just wont be bubbly. Here is a link to some other soda's you might be able to make.

Thank you HappyWifey. I am eating a lot of cultured veggies and saurkraut. That really helps me digest better.
I went to the ND yesterday and she has asked me to stay on the very limited diet for a couple of weeks while we put some zinc and licorice into me. Then hopefully I'll be able to go back to having the slippery elm, astragalus, marshmallow root gruel that coats and heals the lining of the intestines. And she put Batman on a 1M sulpher homeopath. He looks soooooo much better already. I had been using the 3X sulpher homeopath from the healthfood store, but it apparently just wasn't strong enough. She would like for me to stay on an allergen free, gut healing protocol for 6 months to a year. So I'm in it for the long haul.
I'm also adding garlic back into the diet to help boost our immune systems. Batman has been battling staph (MRSA) on and off since our hospital stay with my surgery... And he gets boils in the hardest to treat areas. We've had to shave his head for one infection, and right now he has one in his eyebrow.
I had taken the garlic out to see if it had any affect on his eczema, but I think it got worse instead of better.
I did soak my grains back before Mo and her dairy allergies, and wheat/gluten intolerances. After that, we stopped making bread for the most part so our grain consumption has been more along the lines of millet, rice, quinoa, and I have really just been overwhelmed trying to just feed and treat everybody. Supplements morning noon and night, juicing several times a day, keeping a new batch of saurkraut brewing, fixing every meal from scratch,... all of this while lacking sleep (Batman doesn't sleep well due to the itchiness and inflammation) on top of still not feeling quite myself yet. I've been a bit pressed.
I've got a lot of stuff on my to do list that I want to either get back to doing or try out soon, but right now I'm just doing what I can each day and leaving what I can't for another.

I hope you are able to get rest soon, it's too bad I'm so many hours away, I'd come over and help if I was closer.
My mom actually just told me last night about a girl in our church has MRSA, and she did some research (wanting to know how to get rid of it if we got it, apparently it's contagious?) and found out that GSE will get rid of it quite quickly.
Keeping you in my prayers,
Laura

When I was talking to the pediatritian about it, he said that different strains of MRSA respond differently by different antibiotics. My MRSA may respond well to gse, while your MRSA responds better to _____. At any rate, tea tree oil has done a great job of keeping an early infection down, but doesn't do much once it gets set in well, when I don't catch it early, so maybe gse is the answer for that. Thank you L~
Oh, and I would LOVE it if we were closer to one another... maybe, someday, this side of heaven.

I was just looking online for homemade conditioner recipes and I found something interesting. You had mentioned that you can't have red cooking wine or balsamic vinegar right? One of the websites that I went to had in their recent posts an article about lead in those two items. I thought that that might be interesting for you to look at...

Beka,
Just wanted to say thanks for this recipe. The whole family is down sick (again
) and I made this tonight. Very yummy and comforting. My husband even liked it on the first try, and he's not a 'like it on the first try' kind of guy.
