I've been battleing a sinus infection that's recently turned into an ear infection.  I pulled out all the stops with natural treatment, but nothing seemed to help so I've given in and went to the doctor.  He (of course) gave me antibiotics, along with cough syrup and a decongestant.  I'm wondering, if I take the antibiotics, how much probiotics do I take along with them?  Do I take them at the same time, or wait till I finishe the round of antibiotics and then start probiotics?  Will the antibiotics kill the probiotics if they're taken at the same time?

Yes, I know antibiotics are bad, I'm just desperate enough to take them and want to know the safest way to go about it.

Antiobiotics aren't bad; indiscriminate use of them is.

I've personally found that taking antibiotics can trigger a vaginal yeast infection. I always make sure that I eat yogurt daily while on them.

I hope your health improves soon!  Smiley

I would think the antibiotics would kill any probiotics you take while using the antibiotics, but I am not an expert, lol! If it were me, I would go yogurt, keifer, etc while on the anti and then load up the probiotics after. But that's just my not researched opinion.  Grin

Yogurt, homemade saurkraut, and kefir while on the rx.  Probiotics starting 3 days after the last dose of antibiotic and continuing for at least a week.

And I know what you were getting at when you said, 'antibiotics are bad'...  I go every alternative route I can before heading down the anti trail myself... but without antibiotics, my surgeon informed me last September, I'd likely be dead, dead, dead.   Cheesy  I told her 10 out of 10 people die, but thanks all the same. Thanks guys, I hate doing this because I didn't start getting sick until I had that last surgery and they gave me antibiotics through an IV.  Undecided  Before that i'd been fine all winter, even when I was exposed to the swine flu and several other things.  Now I feel like I'm going in a circle with taking this junk, but I'm desperate to get well and none of my normal stuff was working.

Cecilia, a lot of us here are of the general opinion that except in the most extreme curcumstances, antibiotics are bad (not just indiscriminate use of them).  I was speaking from that point of view, but you're certainly free to differ.  Smiley

Read the lacto-fermenting thread, start some lacto-veggies, and during the entire run of anti-biotics, eat lacto-veggies regularly. I think this will be as good or better than any pro-biotic. Not that you should not use pro-biotics otherwise.

Every time I have to take antibiotics I always take probodics with them and I take more then the bottle says to take. I take them at the same time as I take the antibiotics. Actually if you can you could try taking some at the same time you are taking the antibiotics and then some later on too if possible.

It always works out for me at least.

Thanks Gabe and BJ.  I've read the lacto thread, I've been hesitant to start though because of my huge propensity for messing things up!  lol  Cheesy  This is a good excuse to get started anyway.
