After having had the flu a month ago, I have had laryngitis with a burning sensation down low in my throat ever since (for over a month I had virtually no voice!). I had some unrelated bloodwork back from the midwife and my white blood cell count was high, which led them to believe there was a bacterial infection in my throat. I was so tired of being drained from this that I went on amoxicillin after not having been on any antibiotics since I was probably 12 years old. Anyway, now 5 days into the 10-day prescription, I have felt extremely depressed, hopeless, crying all day for nothing. The only thing I have done differently is the amox. Does anyone have experience/knowledge about this? I don't want to take it anymore if it is causing this. I was very scared about how I felt today and never want to feel that way again. Any help is appreciated!

MrsHope, once you begin an antibiotic, you need to finish the round of the Rx or the surviving bacteria in your body can mutate and become resistant, making it that much more difficult to get rid of the infection.

If it were me, I would check with the pharmacist for his recommendation of an alternative anti-biotic and ask him if he knows of others with your side effects. Then, call your doctor and ask if you can get a change of prescription.

I once called a Dr. to tell him I would be discontinuing a script because it was so harsh. They quickly told me that they could make a substitution to another that would not affect me the same. I was told that patients often have adverse reactions and need to be switched. So, I would just encourage you to find out what else is available.

Thanks, SC! I do know about finishing all the meds, so I paged my doc tonight and asked her. She said she had never heard of this drug causing these side effects, however, if I felt certain it was the cause, to stop and if the infection returned, she would prescribe a different class of antibiotics. She is a naturopath, so antibiotics are usually the last thing she tries. Anyway, after some researching, I found this:

It looks like I am not the only one. I mean, it was scary...I sat down on the floor of my kitchen this afternoon and was bawling uncontrollably. I felt suicidal and completely hopeless all day, which is opposite of my normal disposition. I will not take this stuff again even if there is a chance it could be the cause, it was too terrifying. I already feel better since missing my last dose. So, hopefully no infection will return, but I will be on the lookout. Ugh.

I wouldn't worry about the bacteria mutating and becoming resistant, it usually doesn't happen that quickly... but what will happen is that your flora-free system will get totally hammered by any remaining (bad) bacteria.

Not sure about the depression, however, amoxicillin in particular is famous for spawning fungal infections... bleh.

Anyway... you have any lacto-fermented veggies yet? Eat them regularly over the next five days and (IMO) can the antibiotics.

If you don't have lacto-veggies, try drinking live culture vinegar (a teaspoon) in a glass of juice several times throughout the day coupled with kefir or yogurt. On top of that you could drink "garlic tea." That usually kicks anything I have.

You can also ask for a different anti-biotic from your doc. I am sure she would change the prescription. <soapbox>Doc's are pretty much just drug clerk's these days anyway... heh... </soapbox>

Thanks, Gabe. I have been meaning to try the lacto-fermenting and even have checked out from the library that preserving book that was recommended. I still need to do it though. I will try the vinegar thing for sure. Garlic tea...well at least my husband is out of town for work right now.  Smiley He gave me enough teasing when we did the garlic poultices for the flu last month.

I do have Mercola's pro-biotics here. I am going to start taking those right away.

About the depression thing....the only thing that caused me to even think about connecting it to the amoxicillin is that is says on the bottle that it may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills and I figured....that must be messing with hormones somehow then, right? I don't know. Also, something I noticed on a lot of those posts in that link I listed above, is that the people used to take amoxicillin as a child, then haven't taken it for years, then they took it and got these side effects. I don't know if there's anything to that or not. I haven't taken any drugs for years and years before this. I think I learned my lesson, too.

I feel your pain Mrs. Hope, I'm currently taking Amoxicillin too and have found myself getting irritated, 'snappy', etc. etc. and other things that usually aren't too big of a problem for me.  And OH, the pain!!!  I am tender all over.  I believe more than ever that Fibromyalgia is basically a Candida overgrowth.  I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia a few years ago and was in so much pain all the time that the doctors put me on tons of drugs.  After I joined WTM I quit all of them except a low dose pain killer, and once I did a (partial) candida cleanse I was able to cut down to one small dose of the pain killer per day.  I think if I can ever get the willpower to do a candida cleanse the right way I'll be pain free.  But since taking this amoxicillin, the pain has come back all over and worse than ever. 

So I said all this to say, if you were possibly prone to Candida over growth before taking the amoxicillin it may be worse now and that could be causing a lot of your symptoms.  I've been drinking raw apple cider vinegar with the mother in my water, eating tons of yogurt, and starting some lacto-veggies (not ready yet) to help.  The ACV has been helping my symptoms quite a bit, but I really don't expect that they'll go away until I'm off the amoxicillin and can do another candida cleanse.
