Well we got to see fireworks tonight.  Our oven lit up and threw a few sparks around inside.  Nothing too serious but now we are without a stove until Daddy can either fix it or we get a new one.  Anyway my question is- Do any of y'all have recipies, that would normally be cooked in the oven, that use the stovetop and/or microwave?  Rjght now we are wondering about biscuits.  Thanks so much!

If you have an electric skillet or electric roaster oven you can set the temp (say 350*) Preheat it, place a rack inside raised up on canning jar rings or something like that & set the baking pan on the rack to bake. Needs to be covered during the preheating & baking.

As far as the oven, check Craig's List www.craigslist.org you can often find a used appliance for less than it would cost to fix a broken one.

Or... I have been dying to try a rocket stove... if you husband is the brave, exploring new territory type... I would love to hear about one in regular use.

Search "rocket stove" or "rocket oven" on google... or see my UE post here: rocket stove info...

The woman in this blog makes it her goal to never use her stove and has tried many recipes in her crock pot- even bread and pizza.  She blogs about it a lot so you could probably get some good tips.

I didn't have a stove for a year. I used electric skillets, a bread machine and a toaster oven. Toaster ovens can be pretty cheap, but it takes forever to bake a lot of something and you need to cover everything with tin foil so it will bake evenly.

If you have nice stainless steel cookware you should be able to bake cakes and things on a low heat with the lid on, I havn't tried it but I have heard it works.

Also you could use your crockpot, again I haven't ever done that but a search online should find recipes. You could make your biscuits much like dumplings too. Smiley

I had forgotten about the time I had to do 'camp kitchen' for about a year. I did all the cooking for 5 people for about a year w/a two burner hot plate, a crockpot, & a toaster oven. Doable but it is extra hassle although I was washing dishes in a bathroom or dishpan of water on a table which was a lot of the hassle & you have your kitchen sink which will make it easier. Here's a couple of posts of mine about it from WTM that might help:

I just also remembered that in a house we rented one time the oven wasn't working so I had stove top only for a long time. I did pasta, stir fry, soups & the recipes I posted about from posts 181-183 on this WTM thread- this link will take you to post 181:

Also, dumplings cook on top of the stove in broth, soup or stew. They make a great sub for biscuits. If you eat white flour Bisquick makes great dumplings & the directions are on the box. If you use canned refrigerated biscuits just lay them on top of the simmering broth, soup or stew; boil gently for 10 mins UNcovered & then cover & cook 10 mins longer.
