I'm thinking of signing my oldest son up for martial arts for the self-discipline and exercise. There are several "Karate for Christ" groups here. For some reason that just sounds kind of strange to me.  For those of  you that have done martial arts, what did you specifically look for in a studio? They are on every corner here. Has anyone done the Karate for Christ? Thanks for any advice. Leslie

Beka's brother in law used to be a part of a "Kicks for Christ" club that studied karate... it seemed kind of cheesy in general, but this particular club was great as concerns martial arts. The instructor was great and the club had a great ethos for study and gaining skill.

I'd say, ignore the labels and look for a good instructor. Not necessarily a "Christian," just a good man who is a good teacher. I assume you are not looking for deep doctrinal instruction... just karate, right?

Right. I would like to avoid the eastern religion stuff too. It doesn't seem like that is much of an issue here in VA, though.(I should probably change my user name!) Thanks.
