Does anyone have a creative way of organizing and storing used and unused childrens shoes?  We seem to always be struggling with finding shoes, keeping pairs together, storing them in a way that doesn't crush or scuff them, finding the right size.  I'm about ready to give them all away and buy one pair of black shoes in each size and that's it!  Not really, I don't think I would do that but somedays.......!

I found something that works for us. You know those clear plastic "bags" with the zipper that new sheet sets and bedding sets come in? We happen to have a bunch of those I have saved over the years. I stick the kids' shoes in those and zip them up and they stay nice and neat in the closet and since they are rectangular, they hold the shoes just right. Then I can see what's in the bag without having to take everything out.

For shoes that are worn frequently, I would suggest finding a place either right inside or outside the main door you go in and out of most often and building or buying shelves or a "shoe apartment."  My children are trained to know which shoes can be left by the door and which they must put away in their closets (shelves or a "shoe apartment" works here, also).  Smiley  Shoes by the door are tennis shoes, flip-flops, and sandals, while church shoes or other nice ones are stored in their closets.

The link below has a good picture of the "shoe apartment."  You can find these at home improvement stores and even Wal-mart or Target.

The best thing we did was pare it down to bare minimum.  1 Dress(daughter has 1 white, 1 black), 1 casual, 1 flipflops (and 1 athletic/dance/riding boot where necessary)

Then each child's shoes go in their closet.   I sometimes have to remind them when we get home and kick off shoes, but I find it best to have them put away right away.  My son has a shelf where he lines up his shoes, and my daughter has one of those organisers that hang on the back of her closet door.  This keeps them neat, tidy, and matched up!  My hubby's and mine go in the coat closet, along with snow boots.

I LOVE using the door for storage.  The over the door style organisers are cheap, readily available, and easy to make yourself even!  If you don't have a door free you can always bolt one to the wall!

This drives me NUTS too!  So glad other women have the same crazy attitude about shoes!! I make sure we all have only 1 pair, maybe two, but there are six of us, so do that math.  Plus our house is small, so there seems to be no place to put them where I don't trip over them, and then the boys all manage to lose them!  How, I don't know.  You only have one pair!  Wasn't it on your feet?  All that to say, I am BOUND and determined to find a solution.... one that works once and for all!

We use this shoe organizer. Smiley We actually need 2 of them that we can stack! It's a pretty good solution, but ours is partially broken. Undecided I love the idea of keeping church shoes elsewhere!!! We actually started keeping church clothes all on the same bar in a closet alltogether. This makes it easier to pick out the clothes on Saturday so that we can be on time on Sundays... I think I may add the church shoes to that closet. Thank you, LTRM! Smiley

LOL me too! I usually only have two pairs of shoes myself. I just can't deal with more than that, they're such a pain to store. Although if we end up with a big family like we hope to, I like Homeschool Newbie's system, and the freezer bag system. For myself, I've never been one of those fashion shoe-obsessed ladies, but I did have a thing for wedge heels....as high as possible....before I met my husband. He nipped that one in the bud real quick lol, so now it's just about neutral colors, comfort, durability, etc. And no heels.  Tongue  I'm dreading the time when our baby starts to need shoes.

Thank you for all your suggestions.  I finally went through ALL our shoes.  I had DD's divide them all by size, putting all of each size and it's 1/2 size in one labled walmart bag.  Then I took one bag at a time and choose a limit of 3 pairs for each size-one tennis shoe, one girls dress shoe and one boys dress shoe, oh and one pair of sandals if there were any.  Anything else went into a give away bag.  Some sizes didn't have 3 pairs some had lots of extra.  I ended up giving away 3 paper bags full of shoes.  Then I took out any shoes that I currently needed for my kids.  I then put the plastic bags, loosely tied, in boxes.  I labled the boxes with the sizes and also wrote down which sizes I had taken out and the date.  Now when my kids grow out of their current size, I will FIRST gather all the shoes of that size, get rid of extras, if any, and put them in a walmart bag, label it and put it in the correct box and THEN take out the new size and maybe if I really stick with things, write down the size I removed on the box.  Now I am totally a right brain type person so, I might let this whole system fall apart but for now it works great and I feel so good about giving away all those shoes.  I did have about a dozen or so odd shoes!  Not sure what I'll do with those yet.
