I was looking for some experiences/stories/opini0ns about having your labor induced. My situation is, I'm still pregnant lol.

So depending on which due date you go by (I've been given 2 by my doctors in this pregnancy), I'm either at 41 weeks, 6 days right now or at 41 weeks, 1 day. I've had a couple of false alarms but no actual productive labor yet. So my OB said that if the baby doesn't come naturally by this weekend, he wants to induce. I'm pretty scared by some of the things I've heard about inductions. Anyhow, just wondering what y'alls experiences were...

My experience is limited, as I have only had an augmentation with my 3rd, though I've had pitocin with all three b/c I seem to get to 7cm and shut down.  Anyway, it usually puts me into hard labor right away, with virtually no transition.  I've heard some say that with inducing you *have* to have an epidural, but this has never been true for me, as I've never had an epi before.  I've always bounced back after pitocin pretty well, so it was okay, but I don't really want that with this next one (due anyday).

Have they given you a size of the baby or if you're dilated or your cervix is thinning at all?

Anyway, don't know if that helps, but hopefully you will go soon.

Praying . . . Smiley

I have 3 children.  With the first, I went into labor which did not progress very quickly, so my water was broken and then I delivered naturally (ie. no epidural or other pain meds).  With the second, I was induced at 41 weeks because they did not like the results of my stress test.  With the third, I was induced at 41 weeks after my OB turned my baby.  It didn't take and rather than spend the night in the hospital hooked up to the fetal monitor, I went home but came back about 6 days later for a second attempt at induction.  I didn't have an epidural or pain meds with my second and third babies.

The contractions with my induced labors were stronger and closer together when compared to labor with my first born.  I had always heard that if you are induced then you pretty much HAVE to have the epidural, but I was able to go without the meds.  It helped that when I finally thought I had to have something, it was too late both times. Wink  (I only mention this in case going without the epidural is important to you- it is more work, and more pain, but when it comes to the actual delivery it is so worth it to me.  I can feel what is happening and can tell whether my pushing is productive or not and the actual pushing seems to be shortened.)  I had to remain hooked up to the fetal monitor the times I was induced, so that limits the ability to walk around.  At the beginning I did any walking/standing around my hospital bed and spent some time on a birthing ball instead of walking the halls like I had done with my first.

The pediatrician's exam of my second and third babies "dated" them as being 40 weeks.  Neither of them had signs of being "post-due".  I wonder if I would have gone into labor with them eventually.  I do think in my case it was best to be induced.  My daughter (second labor) seemed to be in a bit of distress according to the tests. My son (third labor) weighed in at 9 lb 14 oz and got his shoulder stuck on the way out.  Who knows how big he would have been several days later!

Does your doctor say why he wants to induce?  With both of mine there were specific reasons my doctor gave for wanting to induce beside the due date.  Have you tried anything to get labor started on its own?

Andiclare,

You might call this self-inducing... here is what I do:

Take Black and Blue Cohosh tinctures 3 - 5 times a day. About 4 drops under the tongue of each. Rest a lot. Drink a lot. Walk and breath. Think about holding a baby, nursing. Smell the baby clothes. Rub Castor Bean oil on your belly and cover with a warm wet towel.

For me, about 24 to 48 hours later I go into a labor and give birth in 2 - 5 hours after that. Done it several times now. ;-)

Being a first time mommy, it would be preferable if you could have a midwife supervise you through this. If your doctor is very open minded, he might be okay with supporting you in doing this as well... not many would be though.

love,

Beka

Both of my children were born by induction with pitocin, and I my LMP dates were accurate.

My first was almost 42 weeks and I was so stressed at wanting to control it that my blood pressure was starting to rise.  I also had never had any contractions at all.  Turns out that due to cervical scarring from prior surgeries I didn't even dilate with the pitocin.  I ended up requiring a 'breaking thru' of the scar tissue with an amnio hook and they were able to break my waters.  I then had a quick and easy delivery (about 3 hrs from 0 to 10; pushed 5 min).  This was a dangerous thing as I had been on pit for 2+days and had no dilation.  It was also very painful and I did take narcs.
This baby was 20 inches and 6 pounds 13 oz.

My second I just kind of  figured that the induction thing worked well for me so I wouldn't discount it.  I went to 42 weeks and was induced.  This time I did have 1 episode of Braxton-Hicks for about an hour, but no other contractions thru out the pregnancy.  This induction went well.  I had no narcotics, but did have an epidural after having  a couple of contractions.  My MD said that since my last one progressed so quickly he wasn't worried.  Started induction at 7am, contractions at 10:30. Epidural at 11am.  Reached 10 cm by 5pm and pushed for an hour this time.  Baby was 23 inches and 9pounds 8 oz.

Also first delivery was by a nurse midwife and I had horrible tearing.  Second was by an MD and even with such a large baby I had absolutely NO tearing or cuts.  My midwife was almost more medical minded than my MD.  Also the nurses at the hospital for my second child were wonderful.

If I had to do it again I would use Beka's recommendations or the ones on WTM.  I've always been curious if there is just something freaky with me or what that I never really went into labor with mine.
I don't recommend inductions, either.  If you can go natural, go for it.  Induction is rough, and as with any medical intervention, it does come with the possibility for adverse reactions.

I did not have induced labor, but I did have a very long slow labor that according to my doctor needed medical intervention. I just want to say that the 5 hours of hard back labor I had were completely managable until they gave me Pitocin. THEN labor was incredibly painful and all of my coping skills went out the window. I ended up having an emergency csection as the Jordyn never moved down the birth canal after 5 hours of pushing!

BUT, there were a lot of factors going against me. I had been in labor for 48 hours and had not been able to sleep more than 10 minutes at a time. I never felt "pushy" and was in so much pain that I couldn't feel the contractions to know when to push. I kept falling asleep in the middle of contractions/pushing!!!!

All of that to say, if you're wanting to be induced because you are uncomfortable being pregnant I would consider staying pregnant until you go into labor on your own. Laboring on Pitocin is just not much fun!!! If your doctor feels it's necessary to induce you I would consider pain medication or at least have a lot of "tricks" up your sleeve to deal with the pain. And pray and trust God... he was with me all the way and he'll be with you too!!!
