ACK! How much grammar?

I bought " easy grammar" for my 4th grader... It's simple.. but... YUCK.. How many years do we have to do this? Any thoughts on how much grammar we should be doing?

I didn't appreciate Easy Grammar much. I much prefer to use a more natural approach to teaching grammar.
I like to take grammar lessons directly from the text of something they are reading. I have them do copy work or dictation from their reading and then take the grammar lesson directly from that.
A couple of good helps for us with this approach has been Simply Grammar:
http://www.amazon.com/Simply-Grammar-Illustrated-Karen-Andreola/dp/1889209015
and Scholastic Guides Checking Your Grammar:
http://www.amazon.com/Checking-Your-Grammar-Scholastic-Guides/dp/0590494554/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282445677&sr=1-1
My favorite 'help' is the grammar guide that
use
to come in Sonlights Core 3... but it's no longer available.
We also enjoyed the Grammar Ace product from Sonlight:
http://www.sonlight.com/RL6.html
The lessons are short and simple and my husband and I enjoyed listening to the old School House Rocks songs.

We listen to School House Rock, and our kids have absorbed basic grammatical concepts from the songs.
Like d&l, we teach grammar as part of everything else, written and spoken. When they write, I take them through the writing process, and thereby they learn to conform to standards of written language for Standard English Dialect. However, it's not only prescriptive, but also descriptive: Besides editing and revising what was in error, I teach them the concepts they already knew, but didn't realize that they knew. In speaking, we provide a model of Standard English Dialect, and sometimes (not always; don't want to get bogged down when the grammar snippet would demolish a communication that trumps it in importance) we give them the correct grammar so they can restate their message using the target form, and if the moment is opportune, we give the grammatical explanation.
If this is too vague, I can get more specific with examples, but didn't want to go into it if you already get the idea. We do have grammar workbooks. We use them once in a while as a reference, but not as a curriculum to follow.

We started doing something last year that has worked well. We write a Bible verse on a white board and then mark the different grammar. Boxes around verbs, underline nouns, squiggly underline adjectives, etc. Its kind of fun to see if we can identify every word in the verse. I need to get a good grammar guide though because I get stuck on some of them. Its something all of us can do together too.
We have also done Schoolhouse Rock, Mad Libs and corrected their speaking/writing. What we have not done is any formal workbook/textbook grammar. My oldest two have done well on standardized testing so I guess our "program" has worked.

Try Learning Language Arts Through Literature. Has copywork/dictation and a short, easy, painless grammar lesson each week. We really like it. Similar to what D&L shared.

D and L: I have the book
Simply Grammar
and actually started looking through it last night... ( Bought a used copy just to see if I would like it) I do believe it might be a better choice than the
Easy Grammar
. Too bad I didn't get to see them both before buying.
Do you think Simply Grammar is a good program at least through the 8th grade?
What's the deal with schoolhouse rock? Are these cd's or what? Sounds like fun!
SMFMOMMY- I love the bible verse idea!

School house rock is a series of little animated music videos that were put out on television. They are all educational - math, history, grammar, science. We enjoy them here.

Here is an all in one grammar curriculum. You can do it one year (for older kids) or spread it out over several years. I don't think you need to do formal grammar in the early grades and they can "catch up" easy enough when they are older and more mature. I bought this this year and am excited about it. It even has a game to help.

I have forgotten all about school house rocks! We have a great CD of states and Capitols, I bet grammer would be as much fun or funner with schoolhouse!
Do any of you know of some quick refrences a mom who isn't that great at grammer could get her hands on
I would love some basic rules to teach the children. We focus so much on reading it hasn't really been a problem, but it would be nice to have a little something!

Skydance's mom:
I have not bought the schoolhouse rock yet, but I intent to
Regarding quick references to grammar: As I recall, Charlotte Mason did not teach grammar until about the 4th grade. I can see why! I think kids need to be a little older to understand the concepts. These are the 2 resources I am using with my 4th grader:
Simply Grammar
by Karen Andreola and
Language Lessons
by Sandi Queen. These are the best books I have found for grammar... If you decide to purchase
Simply Grammar
, you can probably find it used. I think it's a great resource to use with multiple children because it is gentle learning and non-consumable.
