So glad to find this thread. I "play" piano (when I have one). So many songs are precious to me. DAY BY DAY has already been mentioned, but that's a song that usually comes to me in times of trial. I've sung it thru tears as a prayer to God and to help bring peace in my heart.
I've actually gone back to playing as my husband bought me a keyboard for Christmas.
I've been wearing it out! As I'm getting back up to speed (I'm self-taught which is a funny story--should anyone ever want to hear it). As I'm getting my confidence back, I'm pulling out all the hymnals that I learned with and there are so many good songs in the Hymnals. Being that's all I've really ever played, I do not really want to learn anything else right now.
How Great Thou Art--first song I taught my self, one note at a time for the right, one note at a time for left. Needless to say I know this song front and back and it is truly beautiful.
Here are some of the ones I've found recently that I'm loving and since no one else seemed to want to have the old hymn discussion with me, (offline w/ friends and family) I'll bring it here where y'all have already started without me!
HE SET ME FREE
Once Like a bird in prison i dwelt, no freedom from my sorrow I felt,
But Jesus came and listened to me,
and Glory to God, He set me Free
Good-by to sine and things that confound,
Naught of the world shall turn me around,
Daily I'm working, I'm praying too,
and Glory to God, I'm going thru
He set me free, yes
He set me free, and
He broke the bonds of prison for me;
I'm glory bound my Jesus to see,
For Glory to God, He set me free.
Remember this? God is so good and I've been singing this for weeks and trying to teach it to my boys, who get embarrassed when I try to teach them to sing.
DO LORD
I've got a home in gloryland that outshines the sun,
I've got a home in gloryland that outshines the sun,
I've got a home in gloryland that outshines the sun
I've got a home in gloryland that outshines the sun,
Way beyond the blue
I took Jesus as my Savior, you take him too,
I took Jesus as my Savior, you take him too,
I took Jesus as my Savior, you take him too,
I took Jesus as my Savior, you take him too,
Way beyond the blue
Do Lord, O do Lord, do remember me,
Do Lord, O do Lord, O do remember me,
Do Lord, O do Lord, O do remember me,
Way beyond the blue
I think we sang this as children???
I could go on, but I'll stop with one more. This one I don't remember ever singing or hearing sung in any of the churches I've been in. But I love the words.
IF THAT ISN'T LOVE
He left the splendor of heaven
--knowing his destiny
was the lonely hill of Galgot ha,
There to lay down His life for me
Even in death He remembered
The thief hanging by His side:
--He spoke with love and com pasion
Then He took him to paradise.
IF THAT ISN'T LOVE, the ocean is dry,
there's no stars in the sky,
and the sparrow can't fly!
If that isn't love
Then heaven's a myth,
there's no feeling like this
if that isn't love.
In case you are not familiar with this song, it is very slow and when I sing it/play it I just feel like I'm giving such heartfelt praise to God.
I don't think any of these songs are controversial, I was raised with these hymnals. If any of them contain anything not in keeping with genereal "feel"? of this board, please remove my message. I won't be offended. I'm just glad to get to share these songs that have recently been on my mind.

I just heard this song by Michael Card yesterday and the words are so beautiful and full of truth, it brought tears to my eyes:
Love Crucified Arose
by Michael Card
Long ago He blessed the earth
Born older than the years
And in the stall a cross He saw
Through the first of many tears
A life of homeless wandering
Cast out in sorrow's way
The Shepherd seeking for the lost
His life, the price He paid
Love crucified, arose
The Risen One in splendor
Jehovah soul Defender
Has won the victory
Love crucified, arose
And the grave became a place of hope
For the heart that sin and sorrow broke
Is beating once again
Throughout Your life You felt the weight
Of what You'd come to give
To drink for us that crimson cup
So we might really live
At last the time to love and die
The dark appointed day
That one forsaken moment
When Your Father turned His face away
Love crucified, arose
The One who lived the died for me
Was Satan's nail-pierced casualty
Now He's breathing once again
Love crucified, arose
And the grave became a place of hope
For the heart that sin and sorrow broke
Is beating once again
Love crucified, arose
The Risen One in splendor
Jehovah soul defender
Has won the victory
Love crucified, arose
And the grave became a place of hope
for the heart that sin and sorrow broke
is beating once again
Love crucified, arose
The One who lived and died for me
Was Satan's nail-pierced casualty
Now He's breathing once again

This song is from
Acapella Lullabyes
and I was just reminded of it today so I thought I'd share it. I used to rock and nurse my babies while listening to it and it always made me cry! You've
got
to have this cd if you've got kids. It's sooooo good.
Rocking Song
~Acapella Lullabyes
Gonna hold this child, gonna hold her tight
Gonna hold my baby till the morning light
Though I may be tired and I may be weak
I will love this child so small and meek
Gonna hold this child, gonna hold her tight
Gonna hold my baby till the morning light
Gonna let her know that nothing's wrong
Gonna hold my baby and sing this rocking song
Gonna hold this child, gonna hold her near
Gonna hold my baby, wipe away her tears
I will keep on rocking till she feels all right
Gonna sing her songs about Jesus Christ (Jesus)
Gonna hold this child, gonna hold her near
Gonna hold my baby, wipe away her tears
I will cradle my child till the pain is gone
Gonna hold my baby and sing this rocking song
Gonna hold this child, gonna hold her near
Gonna hold my baby through the tender years
As she starts to learn, as she starts to grow
I will show her things she needs to know
Gonna hold this child, gonna hold her near
Gonna hold my baby through the tender years
As she moves away and the days grow long
I will pray for my baby and sing this rocking song
Gonna hold this child though she's far away
Gonna hold my baby like it's yesterday
Though I may not see and I may not know
Gonna keep on praying rocking to and fro
Gonna hold this child though she's far away
Gonna hold my baby like it's yesterday
Gonna let her know my love's lifelong
While she holds her baby and sings her rocking song
I need some kleenex...

8 years ago, my husband's older brother was killed in a motorcycle accident. I was asked to sing in his funeral. Before he died, he, my husband and I would get together and play music and sing for hours. One of the songs he liked for me to sing was Beulah Land. We would really belt it out. My husband asked me to sing that song at his funeral. It was probably one of the hardest things I've ever done, as well as one of the most special. The Gaither Vocal Band performs it on one of their southern gospel albums.
Beulah Land
I'm kind of homesick
For a country
To which I've never been before
No sad goodbyes
Will there be spoken
And time won't matter anymore
Beulah Land
I'm longing for you
And someday
On thee I'll stand
There my home
Shall be eternal
Beulah Land, sweet Beulah land.
A song that's been running through my mind all day is I Surrender All. I love the way CeCe Winans performs it.
I Surrender All
All to Jesus, I surrender
All to Him I freely give
I will ever love and trust Him
In His presence daily live
I surrender all
I surrender all
All to thee, my blessed Saviour
I surrender all
All to Jesus, I surrender
Humbly at His feet I bow
Worldy pleasures all forsaken
Take me Jesus, take me now
It Is Well With My Soul is another of my favorites. It has gotten me through some dark days.

I love that song "Beulah Land" too.
I heard just a couple of lines in some lyrics yesterday that I really liked:
(Paperthin Hymn by Anberlin)
You never know what temporal days may bring
Laugh, love, live free and sing
When life is in discord
Praise ye the Lord

Oh, Jess! I love that song, Beulah Land. I sang that at church this year and had to look over everyone's heads. If I'd have looked at any of the crying faces in the group, I'd have broken down for sure.
One that my daughters and I have been singing lately is titled 'Watchman', is in a minor key with a sort of imperative tone to it. It is from Never the Same Music Publishing -
www.odbbc.org
Dark is the city, no light within.
Sleep overtakes them, women and men.
But in the tower, light can be found.
There is a watchman guarding each sound.
See yonder danger rise as a cloud,
Take up your trumpet, blow long and loud.
Warn all the people, death is at hand,
Heed now the trumpet blasting the land.
chorus: Watchman, watchman, what of the night?
When comes the morning, when comes the night?
Swift comes the morning, then it is night,
Heed now the warning, prepare to fight.
But if the watchman fails to alarm,
Sounds not the trumpet when there is harm,
Lost is the city, slain ev'ry man,
But of the watchman there's blood on his hand.
Ye are the watchmen, in this dark night.
Sin has men blinded, they have no light.
God has commanded, "Warn ev'ry man"
And of their blood, He requires at our hand.
chorus: Watchman, watchman, what of the night?
Judgment is coming where is your light?
Trumpet the warning to ev'ry man,
Lest He require their blood at your hand.
Watchman, watchman, watchman, Where is your light?

This is my current favorite... kinda autobiographical for me ;-)
Selah - Bless The Broken Road
I set out on a narrow way, many years ago
Hoping I would find true love, along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign, pointed straight to you
Every long lost dream lead me to where you are
Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way, into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That lead me straight to you
I think about the years I spent, just passing through
I'd like to have the time I lost, and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand
You've been there you understand
It's all part of a grander plan, that is coming true
Every long lost dream, lead me to where you are
Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way, into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That lead me straight to you
Now I'm just rolling home
Into my lovers arms
This much I know, is true
That God blessed the broken road
That lead me straight to you
That God blessed the broken road
That lead me straight
to you

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus by Newsboys
When you´re dull from all that glitters,
when you´re thoughts have a hollow ring,
when you can´t escape from the feeling
you're getting it wrong...
All your foolproof plans seem foolish,
all your status is status quo,
all your really need to know
is where you belong.
Chorus
Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
Look full in his wonderful face.
And the things of earth will grow
strangely dim in the light
of his glory and grace.
I was used to the cold for so long
that I couldn´t feel anything.
And I shivered and stared like a beggar
who won´t lift his hands.
I was numb until he touched me.
I was deaf until he heard.
I was senseless ´til I met the one
who understands.
In Christ Alone by Newsboys
Verse 1:
In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My comforter, my all in all
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
Verse 2:
In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless Babe
This gift if love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Til on the cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For ev'ry sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ in I live
Verse 3:
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then, bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost it's grip on me
For I am His and He us mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ
Verse 4:
No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No pow'r of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
'Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the pow'r of Christ I'll stand

heart of worship
When the music fades
All is stripped away
And I simply come
Longing just to bring
Something that's of worth
That will bless your heart
I
'll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You're looking into my heart
Chorus
I'm coming back to the heart of worhip
And it's all about You
It's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You
It's all about You, Jesus
King of endless worth
No one could express
How much you deserve
Though I'm weak and poor
All I have is yours
Every single breath
(my favorite verse)
I'm coming back to the heart of worhip
And it's all about You
It's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You
It's all about You, Jesus

This song is a blessing to me, so thought I'd share.
Until That Final Day
By Keith Green
My flesh is tired of seeking God,
But on my knees I'll stay.
I want to be a pleasing child,
Until that final day.
My mind is full of many thoughts
That clutter and confuse.
But standing firm, I will prevail,
In faith that I'll be used.
Amen! I'm asking once again.
Won't you help me my friend, Lord Jesus.
Holy Lord Spirit, set us free,
From chains we cannot see,
Come release us.
I wrestle not with flesh and blood,
My fight is with the one,
Who lost the keys of hell and death,
To God's most precious son.
One sleepless night of anguished prayer,
I triumphed over sin.
One battle in the Holy war,
God's promised me to win.
Amen! I'm asking once again.
Won't you help me my friend, Lord Jesus.
Holy, Lord Spirit, set us free,
From chains we cannot see,
Come release us.
My flesh is tired of seeking God,
But on my knees I'll stay.
I want to be a pleasing child,
Until that final day.

my dad and i share this as a favorite
I surrender all by clay cross
I have wrestled in the darkness of this lonely pilgrim land
Raising strong and mighty fortresses that I alone command
But these castles I've constructed by the strength of my own hand
Are just temporary kingdoms on foundations made of sand
In the middle of the battle I beleive I've finally found
I'll never know the thrill of victory 'til I'm willing to lay down
All my weapons of defense and earthly strategies of war
So I'm laying down my arms and running helplessly to Yours
I surrender all my silent hopes and dreams
Though the price to follow costs me everything
I surrender all my human soul desires
If sacrafice requires
That all my kingdoms fall
I surrender all
If the source of my ambition is the treasure I obtain
If I measure my successes on a scale of earthly gain
If the focus of my vision is the status I attain
My accomplishments are worthless and my efforts are in vain
So I lay aside these trophies to pursue a higher crown
And should You choose somehow to use the life I willingly lay
down
I surrender all the triumph for it's only by Your grace
I relinquish all the glory, I surrender all the praise
Everything I am, all I've done, and all I've known
Now belongs to You, the life I live is not my own
Just as Abraham laid Isaac on the sacraficial fire
If all I have is all that You desire
I surrender all
