What is 'outer darkness'?  (Matt 8:12 & 22:13 & 25:30)

Is it the same as hell?  If so, why didn't Jesus didn't just say the word 'hell', like he did in so many other passages?

Are there any other 'synonyms' of hell used in the Bible?  Lake of fire - is that hell?

Also, your thoughts on Matthew 24:51 -- And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.     (Italics mine)  (underlined portion - these same words are used to describe outer darkness)

I would like to ad onto this question.  My dh was asked last week at our home church what he thought about hell.  We have been studying it this week together and have come up with some interesting things.

The main question we were asked is if Hell is really a place of forever burning?

Well so far what we have done is look up the word Hell in the concordance.

Here is what I have written as notes for our study so far:

Hell is used 54 times in the bible.

31 times in the OT and it is the word Sheowl 7585
hades or the world of the dead (as if a subterranean retreat) its accessories and inmates, grave, hell, pit

12 times in the NT it is the word Geenna (Gehennah) 1067
Valley of (the son of) Hinnom
Gehenna - a valley of Jerus used (fig) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment; hell

10 times in the NT it is the word Hades 86
The place (state) of departed souls; grave hell

1 time in the NT it is the word Tartaros (the deepest abyss of Hades)
to incarcerate in eternal torment; cast down to hell.

From there we thought it was important to look up Everlasting to see if it truly is everlasting.

Everlasting is used 26 times all in NT

166 times it is the word Ainios
perpetual (also used of past time, or past and future as well) - eternal, for ever, everlasting, world  (began)

1 time it is the word Aidios
every during (forward, backward, or forward only) eternal, everlasting.

So from here we decided to compare everlasting with Eternal.  Since we believe that we will have Eternal Life if we are saved.  So what is the difference between Eternal and Everlasting?  They are pretty much synonyms.  So here is the word Eternal, this shocked us.

Eternal
It is used 45 time all in the NT

1 time it is the word Aidios 126 look at everlasting same word.

42 times it is the word Aionios 166 same as everlasting again.

2 times it is 165 and we didn't find anything relevent with that word so didn't write the definition out.

So from our study, what we have gathered is that if you believe in Eternal life than you would also have to say you believe in Everlasting punishment or burning in hell right?

If anyone has other ideas or areas we should study, please point them out and we will study them as well.  This has been very interesting to us.

I have heard sermons on this before.  From my understanding if people die right now without knowing Jesus they go to hell where satan has authority.  After Jesus reigns a thousand years here on Earth satan will be allowed to tempt people for a time and they can chose to follow satan or Jesus and after the time satan will be thrown into the lake of fire where he will no longer have authority over anything and he will remain there for eternity with the other lost people who went to the great white throne judgment.  So hell and the lake of fire are two different places from my understanding.  If I am wrong please correct me.

http://www.thewordsofeternallife.com/hell.html  Here is an article that may help you.

Matt:8:12 says: But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Notice verse 11 said the kingdom of heaven, verse 12 just says the kingdom which I read elsewhere is reffering to Satan's kindom so I would take that to mean Satan and His kingdom will be thrown into outer darkness, (the lake of fire).

I think different synonyms were used because Jesus was speaking in parables.
