I'm looking for some good books about missionaries for family reading.  What are your favorite missionary books or stories?  We've read a handful, but are on the lookout for more.

If you want to read some great missionary books try the Christian Heroes: Then & Now series(1-30).  These books have been such an inspiration to my family. After reading my 9yr old son many of these books he  sees missionaries as brave and adventurous people who do great things for God.  I was in tears while reading many parts of these books because of how mightily God moved to use average people in an awesome way. Here is the web site where you can find them on sale as a set.

There are also some missionary books you can download from this site.

Hey All,
There is also Through Gates of Splendor by Elisabeth Elliott and Jungle Pilot by Russell T. Hitt.  This is about Nate Saint.
We also have a couple of books in a series called Hero's of the Faith there are so many in this series it will take us a while to collect them all.

As far as Family reading my kids and husband love the Sugar Creek Gang!  We hunt around when we are on furlough and try to get the older versions.  We have about half of this set.  Another is the Boxcar Children these both have very imaginative characters and a moral to each story.  My 12 yr. old DS can't wait for me to read to the group, he goes ahead and reads the series and is always several books ahead of us!

Have a great day!

Another one by Elisabeth Elliot: These Strange Ashes. This is the story of her work with the Colorado Indians before she married Jim Elliot. She also wrote a novel called No Graven Image that closely mirrors the story in These Strange Ashes. I liked both, though.

The Missionary Adventures of Bob and Arty  by Jeff Barth (we have four in the series, I'm not sure how many there are)

I second the Christian Heros Then and Now series, we have a lot of those

We also have the book series called Hero Tales - it is short stories of missionaries.  It kind of gives younger children and quick overview of the lives of different famous missionaries - Gladys Aylward, Amy Carmichael, etc...

Right now my teenagers are reading Peace Child, the author is Richardson I think.  He also wrote the book Eternity In Their Hearts.  I haven't read Peace Child yet, but they tell me it is pretty graphic, so it may not be a read for young ones.

Of course, we love Rebekah's Diary too! Wink

Wow, there are so many great stories out there!  I have only read Rebekah Diary so far but the kids an I are planning to read missionary stories from every country that we study in geography.   I really wish that Rebekah would have written a book about her experience in Israel though..... I am soooo curious about it.

A family that I know has just moved to Jerusalem for a job and they are finding it very interesting to say the least.  Finding a church, shopping and all of the protocols of life there.  I would love to read a personal account of someones experience with the Christians there; how they differ from those in America and other places and what it is like dealing with the religious people there in Israel.  Does anyone know of  a missionary book like this?

I should add that the Bob and Arty books are fictional.  I know that is probably not what the questin was pertaining to, but they are really good stories about a very conservative, homeschooling, Christian family and their missionary adventures.  I have really enjoyed reading them with the kids.

GOSPEL FOR ASIA has a FREE book with free shipping they will send to you.  I got some of this from their site , the book is written by K.P. Yohannan----->  In the book he shares how God brought him from his remote Indian village to become the founder of Gospel For Asia.

As of now their free book is on the left side of the screen about half way down the page. And there is a place that says "REQUEST FREE BOOK "  to click on.

I liked this book.

Did you know the Lord Jesus Christ receives praise and worship from believers in Jerusalem around the clock, 7 days a week?  Our friends began this ministry a decade ago - you can read more and see photos, etc., on their website (and I highly recommend their CDs!)

And there are several church groups ministering in Jerusalem, reaching Israel for Jesus Christ - you can research them on this link:

One of the best missionary books I've ever read is a biography of Nelson Bell, a missionary doctor in China and the father of Ruth Bell Graham. Incredible book. I couldn't find it on Amazon and assume it's out of print by now.

By contrast, The Exile by Pearl Buck shows how a family can become embittered when the "missionary" father is absent and busy doing "ministry" in other places. This was the exact opposite of Nelson Bell and his family. Really stunning contrast!

We also loved the book Bruchko.

Missionary Stories With The Millers
--part of the "with the Millers" series

My favorite story is of the African who sang "Take the Name of Jesus With You" as he walked home from the mission hospital where he worked. Three men hiding to kill him were powerless to move an inch until he had passed by.

Another good one, that's free, is from Voice of the Martyers.  It's Tortured for Christ, the story of Richard Wurmbrand, founder of Voice of the Martyers.  It's really stirring, but I don't know if I would read it to young children, since some details of the treatment of Christians is really graphic and horrible.  It's good for adults to realize how these things are, but I think it's too much for a child.
Very good, thought provoking book though!

I just finished reading Peace Child by Don Richardson.  I posted earlier in the thread that my older kids are reading it as part of their Sonlight Cirriculum, but I had not read it yet.  Well, now I have and it was awesome!  It was graphic, so it may be appropriate only for older children.  My 13 year olds are enjoying it.  I love reading stories about how God has already prepared the way for Himself in the hearts of people with cultures and practices that could not be more opposite from the Truth.  Yet, deep within their cultures there are stories passed down through the generations that open the way for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Absolutely amazing!  It puts such a yearning deep within me to be a part of something like that.  Dh and I are really praying about where God would have us serve within the body, and when I read those accounts, WOW!!  I love missionaries.  You guys out there who are serving full time around the world are truly, truly amazing.  I know it is difficult (that is not nearly a strong enough word), but wow the blessing of being used by God and seeing a whole people come to know the true Lord in a personal way.

Somewhat on the topic, I watched Ee-taow for the 3rd time yesterday.  It also comes now with the sequel on one DVD.

Best missionary film ever, IMO, with actual footage to boot.

" EYES OF THE TAILESS ANIMALS"

by
Soon Ok Lee

So far IMO this is the best book ever about the sufferings of Christians and missionaries in north Korea. It is very informative on the profoundly sever forms of torture and abuse Christians suffer in North Korea. Not only Christians but just any one in general. It is simply unbelievable how paranoid the North Korean government is about ppl possibly being secret under cover Christians.

The conditions of the prisons are despicable. And it is not like here in the modern countries where mostly only violent offenders are put in  max security prisons but instead there anyone and everyone gets thrown in prisons for stupid little stuff and they are tortured in weird awful ways. If the prisoner is  even just remotely suspected of being a Christian or missionary they are doomed and in for unbelievable suffering. The conditions are filthy

The north Korean women who wrote this book had an amazing miracle take place that is hard for the average lack of faith ppl to believe. Most all prisoners never make it out alive due to the abuse, torture and starvation  and sicknesses in prisons but God can work miracles. .

I highly recommend this book if anyone wants to know what it is like for Christians in North Korea and wants to be happy with the hardships we have in our lives compared to the hardships North Koreans have.

Pray for them. They are suffering right now as you read this. Suffering more then words can describe. Think of them when you are having a bad day and thank God for that bad day and be glad your bad day is not like the North Koreans bad days.

Here is a link to Voice of the Martyrs site on how to get the book.

A new book soon to be released:
PROJECT PEARL: The 1-million smuggled Bibles that changed China
by Brother David

Project Pearl was the spark that lit off the revival in China that is still going after 27 years. It was the greatest civilian landing on hostile territory in history: 232 tons of Bibles brought in under the noses of the Chinese Coast Guard.  What they were able to confiscate was mostly fished back out of the ocean and dried out for later use.

Somebody needs to do the same thing now, in Burma.

My favorite is "The Small Woman" about Gladys Alyward.  If you've watched the film "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" you may remember this missionary to China.  Of course, as it always is with Hollywood, the film took great liberties with her story (but I still love that movie!!!).  It is a greatly fascinating book!!!
