One of the best missionary books I've ever read is a biography of Nelson Bell, a missionary doctor in China and the father of Ruth Bell Graham. Incredible book. I couldn't find it on Amazon and assume it's out of print by now.

Would that be A Foreign Devil in China: The Story of Dr. L. Nelson Bell?

God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew

Goforth of China by Rosalind Goforth

By My Spirit by Jonathan Goforth

Climbing by Rosalind Goforth

How I Know God Answers Prayer by Rosalind Goforth

....if you want to read about a wife that followed her husband so incredibly, yet struggled too, read the Goforth books.
Jonathan Goforth was used by God so powerfully!  You will be inspired

Our kids really enjoyed reading God's Smuggler (and Bruchko, but that has already been mentioned).  They read those two books over and over!

I know that Bruchko has already been mentioned but have you all read Bruchko and the Montilone Miracle ?

I looooved Bruchko but I love this sequel book even more!  The first half is a review of all of the amazing and tragic things from the first book but with info that was not mentioned in the first book.  Things that I was actually left wondering about after reading the book and to my surprise it actually answered all my questions.
The second half goes into so much more of his life there and what happened to him and more importantly what happened to the Montilones!   Amazing stuff!!!

 Inspiring book!

Thanks for the tip, Monita. Hard to believe he's 68 already, but given the repeated threats on his life it's just as well he retire to the US and write some more. It seems a shame that in all those years he only got 1 book of the Bible translated, but I guess there are competent Motilones who can take on the project now--and maybe he can concentrate on it better from outside the country.  Rebel activities have pretty much put a halt on Bible translation projects throughout Colombia anyway, and Chavez has kicked a lot of translators out of Venezuela.

that's interesting.... I didn't know all that about him. My husband and I have read both of his books and enjoy and recommend them also!! Great books.

I was wrong about the Barí Bible translation--Bruce says he has completed the whole New Testament.

Jungle Doctor Series by Paul White

I've never read any of these books, but we are getting a few of them for Christmas this year.  They sound very interesting! Anyone heard of them?

Here's another really good one: Walking His Trail by Steve & Ginny Saint. Not your typical missionary autobiography.

Esposita,

I absolutely wore out my copy of "Jungle Doctor on Safari" as a child. Fun and insightful at the same time. I also really enjoyed the style in which Paul White tells the stories!

At the top of my list of favorites are these:

Evidence Not Seen by Darlene Deibler Rose.

The Heavenly Man by Brother Yun with Paul Hattaway.

The Hiding Place and Tramp for the Lord by Corrie ten Boom.

If you want an extremely non-typical but fascinating "missionary" story try Spirits of the Rainforest by Mark Andrew Ritchie. (Note: This is definitely an adult-only book. It tells the story of a shaman in his own words... which is a fascinating perspective but includes very frank descriptions of jungle life/warfare. Turns out they are NOT living in Eden. Shocked)
